Went to Akron for a cornhole tournament yesterday and didn't throw well at all. My back went out Friday moving a range and just couldn't get comfortable throwing. The real kick in the butt was when leaving I picked up my roller bag to make my way up the stairs and my back went back in. Happy my back feels better and I don't have to go the the back doc but it could have done that a few hours earlier. Sorry to hear about your back. Cornhole is a rough sport.

Time to jar up a truck load of tobacco

After this morning's fire one the kitchen stove, filling the house with smoke and forcing me to evacuate all the air I warmed today, it might be too expensive for me to continue cooking. I cannot seem to remember what I am doing, wander off, and the iron skillet overheats and incinerates the contents of the pan filling this small house with smoke. I cannot handle smoke with my lung damage. So, evacuate all the smoked with a box fan. Then the house has to be rewarmed as it is about 24 degrees (F) here. Too costly.

6 bags of clothes cleaned out of my dresser and closet today, and my closet and dresser are still full.
I told the wife and kids never to buy me any clothes until I lift the moratorium.
John, It sounds like a good time to relocate to civilization. I hope you can find some sort of more hospitable accommodations.

I know parting ways with the critters will be hard but after a few sun soaked days in a Las Cruces rental to get started you’ll never look back. You could probably find a nice lady to take care of you in one visit to the grocery. store. Seriously you will never look back!

Leaving the property unattended means losing it. The thieves would have everything gone and I mean the metal off the roofs, the lumber from the building structures. Everything will be stolen in a few weeks. Selling it is difficult. While outsiders move here, it can take years to sell. The complications, Closings go on for months or years. So many problems with government, bank and title company incompetence. I could not endure the horrors some of my neighbors have had to put up with. I am not an attractive prospect for ladies. Believe me, over the past 18 years, they have been clear about that!!! LOL. I am here. i could take a vacation! I have thought of a retreat to the Christ in the Desert Monastery south west of Santa Fe. Just quiet and reflection on what is next for me. Yes, that seems negative as can be but that is the way of it here now. Things can change for the better. I am not up to the challenges of a new life somewhere else. onfusion, disorientation, memory failure all make it hard to do much.

My wife has about 500 Ball's so I haven't run out. Had her pick me up a few 100 lids about a year ago I got lazy, and as jars became empty, they got shoved into the closet. I'll wash about 10 jars a day and buy a few boxes of lids. I used 32 that I washed a month or so ago, but there are about 50 more to go. I didnt bother with it today.

About the lids, I saw this on a canning site:
As a reminder, “lids” here refers to the flat metal discs with the rubber gasket ring on the underside. It does not refer to the canning rings.
Jessica Piper from Ball says,
We recommend using the lids within a year of purchase, although you can still use them 3 to 5 years later. ” [34] She adds:
The lids don’t really have a shelf life per se…. whatever’s the oldest, use that first… Again, we recommend within a year, but if you have some that are 3 to 5 years, you’re going to be okay.” [35] The USDA says,
Gaskets in unused lids work well for at least 5 years from date of manufacture. The gasket compound in older unused lids may fail to seal on jars.” [36] In 1948, Kerr lids had an indefinite shelf life before use — as far as Kerr’s advice went, anyway:
Will Kerr Mason Lids purchased one year be safe to use in the next year’s canning? The sealing composition in the lids does not deteriorate rapidly and if the lids are stored in a cool, dry place they will keep in good condition.” [37] Note that the shelf life of when to use the lids by has nothing to do with the shelf-life of the lid on the sealed jar. Jessica Piper says:
The lids themselves, the shelf-life for when to use them, that has nothing to do with the year’s shelf life of how long they’re good once you’ve actually preserved with them.” [38] Once sealed on a jar, the seal of a lid should in theory be good for decades, if not centuries.

Useless, though well meaning, to tell us stubborn OFs who’ve lived in the outback as long as we have, to move someplace “civilized.” Speaking for myself, thanks, but NO thanks. John, a monastic retreat sounds just the thing— IF you can find somebody to take care of your place. I’d volunteer if I were closer, but alas…

I certainly did not mean it insultingly, I would love to live remotely as I have in the past. Just reading the posts, and the difficulty of availing himself of medical attention, and resources that may get his health back on track so that he can live long and prosper.
It just sounds like there is nothing within 100 miles, transportation issues, and even FedEx has a problem getting him what he needs to sustain his life.

I understand 100% where you’re coming from. It’s just that at a certain point there you are and there you stay. It’d be nice if at a certain age we could be suddenly—badabing!— transported to a nice hacienda in southern Arizona but for some it’s just not in the cards. And it MIGHT not even be a secret wish…

I did not take any comments as offensive, but from my friends. This is a difficult situation and I have not planned for it well. Relocating would be the smart move but not one I can manage now. Too late, it seems. I might have someone who could stay here while I went away for a week. We shall see what happens in the new year.

Zero degrees Fahrenheit at 0400. We will drop a few more degrees with the Dawn as the rising sun warms the nearby mountains. That slightly warmer air to the east pushes the cold air down the valley towards us and off the mesa top down onto us below. That is my local climate modeling after 25 years here.

There is some money to be made playing and I at least make my entry fee's back or better most weeks playing and the tournament I just played in the previous month finished 2nd and made a nice chunk of change. I really enjoy playing and it gets me off my butt and out of the house this time of year.

Home was all he knew and wanted so I understand where you're coming from John. The possibility of better surroundings sounds nice but might not be best for you.

During the 25 years I have lived here in remote northern NM, the social contract has changed in the USA. I am not sure I can accept what we have become if I live in closer proximity to more people. So much civility lost. So little concern for others. Just looking at the driving habits of urbanites is enough for me to remain here.

John, it pains me to read of your troubles. I pray that you will be able to find a solution that works...and soon.
One thing about Northern Ireland is that you're never more than about 5 miles from civilisation. That might be too close for some people, though. A 50 mile radius from the centre of Northern Ireland would cover the whole of the country, and some of the Republic of Ireland too.

John’s comments about the “social contract” are accurate, I think. Nationally, we have changed a lot, and not for the better. But there may be local pockets of hope. We are in a cold spell now, -6 as I write and -27 forecast for Thursday. And y’day my furnace failed. Sunday. I called the local HVAC guy for advice, hoping he might have a trick to share that would get the thing started. He said he would come out and look at it. Sunday! I told him No, I could make out with the fireplace and wait ‘til Monday. He came out anyway. Fixed it. I’m not saying everybody out here is like that. But it’s gratifying how many are. So we’re not completely lost, just in real bad shape right now.

Things tend to move in fits and starts when you're an aspirational country (rather than one united by ethnicity or millennia of history, etc.). I can't say I'm super sanguine about our future, but lots of folks said that during Jim Crow, I imagine. And the Great Depression. And the one before that. And the Gilded Age. And the Civil War. And the antebellum decades. War of 1812. Most of us are wrong most of the time.
