We like buying and stuffing the squid like you do with stuffed manicotti. Using the squid instead of the pasta. Saw an Anthony Bordain show once & he was with a gal eating canned fish at some restaurant in Europe. That restaurateur built a heck of a business selling canned stuff & making everyone believe it was better than fresh. And at a premium. Wish I was that smart. God bless him. If my manicotti was as tough as a squid I wouldn't be able to eat it. You're cooking one or both of these things wrong. I've done the manicotti thing. I like to toss them, sliced, in a stir-fry with some rice wine vinegar and such. The squid cooks quickly and does turn tough quickly. I've not seen them in the hinterland, though. I'll not recount my youthful prairie squid experiences here.

The smoked trout was very tasty but a fairly small portion at only 150 calories per can (I think it's 3.5 ounces I'll have to double check) and nearly $4 per can. Worth keeping a few tins for special occasions. It's very light and flaky with just the right amount of smoke and it's tinned in canola oil. Be on the lookout for Bumble Bee smoked trout.

A quick search around Amazon and I'm not seeing in water but did see other gourmet brands of smoked trout in olive oil for get this, a whopping $15 per tin!
That company also sells this fancy "spiced squid in ragout sauce" for $14 per tin!
Lastly, all of it is farm raised trout.

This josegourmet.com make a lot of really good looking specialty gourmet tinned fish but tracking them down, and the very high cost is the issue. They have fried mussels in sauce, various tuna and trout fillets, "squid stuffed in ink", and longer pieces of sauced squid and tiny round pieces, Octopus in Olive Oil and Garlic, Hake roe pate, tuna belly. All types of sardines and others like I've never seen before in stores. Garlic and olive oil cod. Sounds amazing.

My 12 tins of mackerel with lemon arrived. 4.05 oz and 220 cals. Excellent. I’ve been eating it over TaiPei chicken-fried rice. I recommend you keep all the olive oil it’s packed in. I’ll be ordering more of this.

TFAD. Heh. I shouldn't laugh, because I'm the only consumer in the house and I always have anchovies and several varieties of sardines and kippers in the pantry, but I'm thinking about smoked trout now.
I don't play in the $15/tin league, though. I'll wait until Smoking Trouts has it in bulk.

When people buy sardines by the sleeve, then you know TFAD is real. Well that's basically how anyone would order them online from say, Amazon or Walmart. I'd hope people aren't only buying one can at a time online. But I go into Meijer or Walmart and I buy the entire box off the shelf of the couple that I like to stock. When the pandemic started, I bought about 100 cans of the King Oscar's Mediterranean sardines, and as many of Polar smoked brisling sardines, King Oscar's Mackerel in lemon and olive oil, and the Mediterranean styles combined thinking I'd be locked down for an extended period of time so I started stocking survival foods with long shelf life. But maybe it's just me because I also bought the family brand new chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threat level gas masks and a pile of filters for CBRN and virus filtration.
Now's the time to start cellaring the tinned fish, it's all imported and will all cost 2-3x by October.
Buy different types and mix it up. I don't eat sardines daily I have about one can a week. If you eat them even a few tins per week, your mercury and other heavy metals levels in your blood skyrocket. You can go have a blood panel done to see where you're at. Same with any fish from the ocean unfortunately but especially with tuna and sardines and older fish.

TFAD. Probably not a bad way to roll. Inflation is on a precipitous rise, best to prepare.

I often enjoy King Oscar's Wild Double-stacked Sardines packed in virgin olive oil... a frequent choice for me because it's very low in saltiness and the sardines are tender and tasty. I save the oil for future uses.

Well I went off the deep end with the anchovies. Local markets in rural MS only have Crown Prince and King Oscar. I prefer the Crown Prince. I ordered some jars of anchovies from Amazon, Ortiz, Roland and Agostino Recca. Well they all taste like anchovies should, but some are definitely better than others. The best for me was the Ortiz, plump and meaty with the least bones. Worst was the Roland, just too many bones make it unpleasant to eat by itself. However Ortiz are rather expensive, and aren't worth the additional expense for me. All of them are fine used in a Ceasar salad or for any dish. So I'll just stick to my Crown Prince which are fine to eat alone or in a salad.

Sounds like a lot to eat in one sitting… usually one tin a day in the lunch box but keep a few in there just in case. I eat more protein now and less carbs. Old guy needs all the help he can get including eating better.
