Haven't really had time to read back through the thread. How did tinned fish become the hot Patch thing, exactly?

Sounds like a lot to eat in one sitting… usually one tin a day in the lunch box but keep a few in there just in case. I eat more protein now and less carbs. Old guy needs all the help he can get including eating better. Since the thread started, I have forced myself to eat some protein during the workday, and the herring fits the bill. I generally never eat breakfast or lunch, especially on the road, but I know I should eat something.

When I was on the road a lot I always had some dried shrimp to snack on. Never tasted a sardine in my life.

So far my favorite way to eat the olive oil and lemon mackerel filets is to lay down a bed of Lundberg brown/wild rice and then add the tin of fish, olive oil and all. Some capers. A pecan or two. (!) Salt and pepper. Mix and chow down! Tasty and filling.

I'm a straight outta the can kinda guy. Crackers, cheese, olives usually accompany. Capers on the sardines are a nice add.

Good beef Jerky is expensive, and I burn through a bag in no time. I have a nice dehydrator, I need to get some beef from Costco and make my own.

I was trying to think of some disgusting way to use sardines in food, and thought of pork rinds. Turns out it's a thing.
Anyone try it?

I have a nice dehydrator, I need to get some beef from Costco and make my own. I pulled the trigger, Sam’s Club had eye of round at a reasonable price, so I found a common jerky recipe on line, marinated the strips for 48 hours and put them in the Cosori dehydrator for 6 hours at 165°. Turned out pretty good, I really prefer a spicier version, my gringa wife doesn’t so much.

A small late digression (same food, different packaging):
I keep reading that old guys like me need 30 grams of protein with each meal to stop muscle loss. For me, some fish at lunch is an easy and pleasant way to nudge up the protein, but I have a (probably bad) habit of eating at my desk, and tins can be a little messy for that. I recently discovered that Trader Joe's and Jewel have single-serving packets. The selection is limited to salmon and tuna, but you can find a variety of spices and flavorings (at least at Jewel).

I got some Rio Mare tuna from Amazon and it's the best tuna I have ever had. I eat a small tin with the big dipping Fritos and it makes a satisfying lunch.

Back to fish.. Anyone that can tell me what to expect from Herring in wine Sauce . I saw some for $10 at the store today and wondered. $10 is a lot to spend if I dont think I will like it, but hey I spent that much on a cigar without knowing if I'd like it so what they hey... (Liked the cigar, not $10 worth but I did enjoy it. And I know... Cigar VS fish, even more out of range than apples and oranges)

A little more for mackerel. I might spend up to $4.00 for a fancy tin. For $10 (or more), I'll buy a couple pieces of fresh fish.
