Stopped at ye olde spirits purveyor while I was out getting some stuff for the yard. For my birthday, I bought kind of a pricey bottle of bourbon blended American whiskey. It's Bardstown Discovery Series #9.
I know dead flat nothing about it, other than what it says on the bottle: 35% 8-yo spirits from Georgia, 31% 12-yo from Kentucky, 19% 17-yo from Tennessee, and 19% 12-yo from Ontario, of all places. That last one has a 100% corn mash bill, so it's doubly odd. The others are pretty standard bourbon mash bills.

Had a gin and tonic earlier. While that may be a classic British drink, it is well regarded, and refreshing in the southwest.... but then again, the Brit's spent some time in the deserts.

A friend at work retired and decided I needed this. He was correct. Amazing Islay. A great gift from a great man.

Just sat down and poured meself a bit of this Bardstown Discovery #9 I got for my birthday. This is some pretty tasty whiskey. It's darker than I'm used to from a bourbon (blend). It's got more raisin and less cherry, and there's some pepper on the finish. I guess you could say it's kind of a VA/Per whiskey.

The other day, I reluctantly bought a soda at a Jack in the box…. Reluctantly, because they have the digital coke machines that…. Suck! And yes, the Coke I received was garbage. I looked online, found out that it is called the Coke freestyle machine, and it does not dispense syrup, it is flavored cartridges. Love this guys rant..eye opening and spot on. The next time I have a fast food restaurant enquire “do you want a drink?” I will point to the machine and say “ Yes, when you go back to serving real soda”. blog.frankiefoto.com/2016/09/5-reasons-freestyle-coke-machines-are-a-horrible-thing-for-america/

I cannot say that is something to try any time soon. If you enjoy it, "Salud y Pesetas". I know what you mean. It sounds yukkkkk. But it is kind of nice. A not as sweet ice cream soda. An adult ice cream soda, perhaps. I do get the yuks when I have one at a restaurant. Which of course is at least half the fun. So my understanding is that the drink is popular in Utah in part because Coke is popular among Mormons, while coffee is prohibited. It was explained to me that coffee is prohibited not because of the caffeine, but because it is a hot drink. So Coke is ok, even though it is caffeinated. I don't know anything about this first hand except what Mormon friends have told me. In any case to each his own or her own. But you are IMO missing something not to try a bit of half and half in your coke. And I have seen New Yorkers drink it.
