The 'Sound of Silence' thread made me think of other covers that were better or at least on a par with the original.
A few come to mind...
Faith no more - Easy Lemonheads - Mrs Robinson Guns 'n' Roses - Live and let die
Any others to add to the mix?

Always On My Mind - Pet Shop Boys That was a great cover. You've reminded me of the whetus version of 'a little respect'. Also a great cover.

The best cover ever was Aretha's cover of "Respect" .

Marilyn Manson (Eurythmics)- Sweet Dreams
Elvis (Every Artist Known)- Every Song Performed by Elvis
A few off the top of my head. Just my personal opinion of course.

Speaking of The Man In Black- He has an awesome cover of Soundgarden's Rusty Cage as well.

1) Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower beats Dylan's by miles. 2) La Sonora Margarita's version of Corazon Partido also is much funner than Alejandro Sanz' original.

Crosby, Stills & Nash's version of The Beatles' 'Blackbird'. Normally I always prefer The Beatles' originals, except for the above.

Nice list!! And you're right, rusty cage was a great cover... Although I do like the soundgarden version too. It rocks.

I really had to wrestle with this.
I first heard the song "Coconut Grove" when David Lee Roth sang it, and I had no idea it was a cover until I heard the original version by Lovin' Spoonful.
And Roth's version really speaks to me, but so does Spoonful's version, now that I have listened to it a few times. And now I like them both, pretty much equally.
I love Disturbed's version of "The Sound of Silence", but I have loved Simon and Garfunkel's version a whole lot longer. And the two versions appeal on different levels, so it's almost apples-and-oranges, in a way.
I will almost go so far as to say that I like Jimi Hendrix's version of "All Along the Watchtower" better than Bob Dylan's version, but only because I connected with Hendrix's version in a big way, and I didn't really do that with Dylan's version.
But then, I still want to give Bob Dylan his due for creating the song.
So yeah, I don't know. I guess I will say that there are a lot of covers that I like as well as the original.

I wonder sometimes, is the first version that we hear or grow up with the one that we prefer. They have memories etc associated with them and perhaps hit home more. Of course I'm probably full of crap.

Interesting take. I wonder sometimes, is the first version that we hear or grow up with the one that we prefer. They have memories etc associated with them and perhaps hit home more. Of course I'm probably full of crap. Definitely. I also think there's a wife-versus-mistress thing going on there, too. Your wife is the one you first fell in love with, but then there's somebody new in your life, and you're conflicted: tried-and-true versus new-and-exciting. And I really, really want to stick with my tried-and-true, but then there's this temptress... But I don't know. I'm sure I'm waaayyy overthinking this.

I like Allen Toussaint's original version of this song, but I like Little Feat's version better because of Lowell George's vocals. Great song regardless.

This is San Francisco by Elvis Phuong, produced by my brother in-law, Jo Marcel. We raised Jo's daughters, while he pursued his 8th wife. He was a famous singer and nightclub owner in Vietnam. He escaped in '75, came here, worked on cars, and sang in his spare time and gave many of the popular Vietnamese singers their start here. Needless to say, they never mention him now. The YouTubers ripped this from me and the sound on most of them sucks or the song is incomplete. I have not had a chance to re-edit this, as there is the ending of one song, then it leads into San Francisco. It's half Vietnamese and the last half is English. Turn your volume down before it starts. You'll have to click the link to get there. I really hope you'll enjoy this: San Francisco by Elvis Phuong
