We used to make fun of Willie Nelson's voice, but then it grew on us. We used to joke about his covers of great songs, but then we found out that he wrote them to begin with. It wasn't that many decades ago, I found out that he penned the Patsy Cline hit "Crazy". I do like Willie Nelson and I've seen him live twice here in Copenhagen; once with some band I can't remember and once as one fourth of The Highwaymen. The latter was the best by far. A great concert.

In his day, Roy Clark was considered to be the best. Long before Hendrix and Stevie Ray. I think I have a couple of his guitar LPs. Roy was incredibly talented. Unsung guitar hero. He wasn't "unsung" back in the day. He was the number one seller of guitar lesson books for years.

Yeah, I bet Willie makes a trip to Copenhagen every chance he gets. 😉 Actually, he has his own brand of herbs, "Willie's Select" or something like that, so he can just take his private plane to Colorado for "business purposes".

He was not in my way-too-groovy Scene back then, no TV and only "underground" radio. I see now he was a virtuoso and deserving of much respect. I am chastened.

A larger part of the country was influenced by country music back then. You California and New York guys would have had different influences than we undesirables in the middle.

I, for one Californian, LOVE the country influences that have shaped popular rock music.

I was going to say C&D's Good Morning might be better than Early Morning Pipe, but then I realised that this thread is actually about music!
So I'll bite. I really like Bobby Darin's Mack the Knife.

A larger part of the country was influenced by country music back then. You California and New York guys would have had different influences than we undesirables in the middle. Musicians from Fly-Over Country would sometimes appear in California. I believe Mr. Clark was on a different circuit. He may have appeared in Fresno or Bakersfield... sniff. We did not get much Country Music in the 1960s. There were few clubs like "Bob's Country Bunker". Bob Dylan released an album in 1969 with Johnny Cash and that got people wondering if there might be something to it. In the 1970s, Outlaw Country became fashionable. Emmy Lous Harris, Waylon Jennings, Townes Van Zandt, Chris Kristofferson, that sort. Merle Haggard gained some popularity with "Oakie From Muskogee". The Bluegrass Revival of the middle '70s brought all the greats. It took a while but Country Music took hold even in California.

Another cover that came to mind is the Smashing Pumpkins version of Landslide, by Fleetwood Mac. I've gotta say, I love the Pumpkins version of it, but it might not be to everyone's taste...

Bruce Hornsby's live version of Lady With A Fan is far, far better (my humble opinion) than any version the Grateful Dead ever did. His is amazingly soulful, it's on his live album - Here Come The Noisemakers. Even if you don't know the song...if you like Bruce or the Dead, give that link a hit.

wow. I think that is terrible. She sounds like the lady in the church choir that thinks she can sing and everyone humors her because they don't want to offend her. To each his own, I guess.

What about this for a unique and (IMO) better cover...
Outcast - Hey Ya (song doesn't start until 1 minute in)
Obadiah Parker - Hey Ya
Here's the version from 'The Blanks' (from Scrubs). I never knew they were a band!

@robv69 I was using "best" as in "best possible given the material they had to work with" Loving the Zep kazoo cover!

Wether on here or directly on YouTube this music video is slow and distorted. Anybody else notice this issue?

Wether on here or directly on YouTube this music video is slow and distorted. Anybody else notice this issue? It's actually supposed to sound like that. These guys don't learn the song and play it in one take from memory while watching the video, all wearing headphones so they can't hear each other. I find the result strangely hilarious, especially for songs I'm not a fan of.
