David, I’m impressed, Elvis Phuong has a peaceful soothing voice. Thanks for sharing

The Highwaymen's "City of New Orleans" beats any other cover I've heard; even Arlo Guthrie's.

I read this thread with interest and given thought to the comments. I listened to some of the cover versions on Youtube.
So far, I cannot recall a Cover which was better than the original with one exception- Aretha's "Respect".
Certainly, there are many fine covers of classic songs and many songs which are left unplayed which should be coverd. The originals, for me, have that shock of the new which no cover can replace.

Other then Guns N Roses “ Knocking on Heaven's Door “ I agree with you, guess I’m stuck in the past.

I wouldn't say better, but these certainly breathed some new life into these old songs:

Guns N Roses Knocking on Heaven's Door That’s a perfect 10....simply fabulous! I'm on this side of the fence. G'N'R version is great. Another cover I thought was better than the original is Roxy Music version of Jealous Guy.

Never being a fan of the Beatles the Roxy Music version of Jealous Guy for me is the one I much prefer👍

Guess it’s because I was never a big Dylan fan. I stopped listening to him after he made his last great album "John Wesley Harding". "Blonde on Blonde" is still the best album he ever made.

Guess it’s because I was never a big Dylan fan. Not the best vocalist but certainly a great songwriter. I grew up listening to him as he began recording so I am used to that voice.

Always On My Mind - Pet Shop Boys That was a great cover. You've reminded me of the whetus version of 'a little respect'. Also a great cover. Agreed!

I agree, a much better writer then singer! Case in point.....Neil Sedaka had a voice that would chill my bones....lol. But was one of the top song writers of our time. He wrote many songs for the Beatles and Neil Diamond 👍

What about Blood on the Tracks? That's my cut-off point.

I'm not sure with of these I like most.
James Taylor and Emmylou's versions are melancholy and whistful. Bruce's is pissed off. He captures the feeling and sound of the mill and machines with his simple guitar and harp. Great song, great versions, all three.

I found this reference to Neil Sedaka and The Beatles on Wikipedia: "When describing the Beatles' effect on his career in the mid-1960s, Sedaka put it brusquely: "The Beatles—not good!"."
He didn't exactly sound enamored by the four lovable mop tops from Liverpool.

Great topic. One that we were just debating over at work.
Some of my favorites that haven't been mentioned:
A 24 year old Joe Cocker doing the Beatles, A Little Help from my Friends.
Nirvana singing David Bowie's The Man Who Sold the World.
And maybe my favorite cover, Wilson Pickett with Duane Allman doing The Beatles Hey Jude.

Being a fan of Joe Cocker I really enjoy his version! Plus Joe Cocker sung “ You Are So Beautiful To Me “ which was “ our song....my Soulmate...May she Rest In Peace 💔
Not a Nirvana fan at all
Not being a Beatles fan I much prefer listening to Wilson Pickett👍
When the Beatles group parted ways I much preferred and enjoyed the music of John Lennon and Paul McCartney and Wings. Both extremely talented on their own👍👍👍👍👍
