Post your favorites and I'll post mine! I've been on a bing lately and I thought I'd share my joy with all of you. Enjoy I can listen to Cannonball Adderley all day long and never ever get tired of it. Oscar Peterson, and Charlie Parker are also favorites of mine. My uncle and I used to go fishing together a lot. He listens to lots of jazz circa 50s and 60s. I heard it so much in the car with him that it just grew on me. I wish I were around back then to have had an opportunity to see some of the greats perform.

A little late to the game.....This is the best Miles Davis album he ever did, IMO........Kind of Blue is good though, along with Sketches of Spain, and Round About Midnight.

Coming back to playing the piano after a hiatus of 8 years... Progress is slow, but steady: thought I'd share some of my late night doodling with you fellow patchers.
Been playing around with the haunting ballad "Naima" by none other than John Coltrane. Just got to the main theme so far.
And also one of my all-time favorites, a beautiful piece from the Piano Reflections album, Melancholia by Duke Ellington. Norah Jones later covered this (with added lyrics) as "Don't Miss You At All".

There is a good doc/bio on Netflix: Chasing Trane. Several shots show him smoking a pipe, both Meer and briar and he seemed to prefer full bents.

Had a hankering for some late easy listening...
Also, probably my favorite take on this classic tune. Bob Cranshaw on bass and Alan Dawson on drums.

Michel Petrucciani is one of my favorite pianists to listen to, but definitely the one I admire the most. His tenacity is a constant source of inspiration, but mostly I just like the edge with which he plays. Here's a fine rendition of a Thelonious Monk classic.

I've noticed a distinct lack of Screaming Jazz here. I hope you return to see us soon...

Those who don't understand jazz...more specifically...improvisational jazz...will say things like "they're playing wrong notes", or "they're just doing whatever they want". Not so; you just don't understand what you're hearing. The chords are not "random", the notes played by the soloist are not "wrong". There are jazz chords and scales which you'll never hear in any pop or rock song. Play in a dorian or diminished or lydian scale over a rock song...it will sound awful. But play those scales over the right jazz composition...it's as smooth as silk. Again...if you understand what you're hearing.

I have known jazz musicians that didn't like Coltrane, so there are no hard and fast rules about jazz.
