Borkum Riff is made by Orlik They know what they're doing over there. Somebody WANTS the tobacco to come out like that. It's not accidental!
Yup, it’s Orlik....guess they create Borkum Riff not to be a big seller on purpose 👌👍 The last time I smoked Boredom Riff was 1970.

I would say STG but without Dunhill their offerings seem a bit weak or Gawith but with the current availability issues I couldn't commit to them. I'm still not sold on any one MacBaren english blend nor a C&D aromatic and K&K's offerings are too limited in the US. I guess I'm still figuring things out.

could it be said that sutliff is the stateside part of macbaren, or is that too simplified? They are the distribution arm for this side of the pond...Sutliff started out in San Francisco during the California Gold Rush in the 1840's Longer history here.....www.sutliff-tobacco.com/history-of-sutliff-tobacco-company.htmlCheers for that. You are truly our source of all tobacco-related news.

A bit off topic but when Altadis sold Sutliff, MacBaren let the most effective voice in DC for traditional pipe tobacco go. I don't know if things would have ended up any different but it rubbed a lot of guys in the hobby the wrong way. Paul was pretty much a full time lobbyist at times working just for interest of traditional pipe tobacco paid for by Altadis.

It was McClelland and Dunhill but now I'm having to work at finding another ! Sutliff and Orlik/STG are in the running now.

Well, judging by my current Tobacco Holdings (I like to look at it as an investment. ;-P) First place would be Germain & Son, primarily Esoterica.
Honorable mentions are Dunhill & McClelland.

Dino and I have to agree on something, so it may as well be tobacco. Post-McClelland, I'd have to say Germain, followed by SG, Mac Baren, and Sutliff.

Yes, I do. I remember that years ago someone wrote deprecatingly of Sutliff and Russ replied defending that manufacturer, mentioning too that he used their tobacco for his own blends. That was indeed ironic, as were posts by smokers who love Park Lane tobaccos but hated MacBaren and referred to it as MacBitey, without knowing that Park Lane uses MacBaren tobacco. There's a moral lesson to be found there, somewhere, I guess. In this case you chose the wrong example for me, by happenstance, as I love most of Russ's blends, but I can't abide Angler's Dream. Another lesson there too, I guess. And the only blend of his that I can tolerate. It seems that we're different fellows, you and I. They say that diversity makes the world go round, but in what direction I do not know.

I'll go with Samuel Gawith and/or Mac Baren/Sutliff. SG is my vote for top quality leaf. An underrated brand that I think deserves some recognition is Newminster. Blackberry Brandy is a great aromatic and Superior Navy Flake is a very nice Virginia flake bulk.

Mine was McClelland because of their orientals. Nowadays I'm experimenting with D & R orientals mixed with McClelland reds. So I guess they're still my favorite. Yo, Gary, good to see you posting here...have a great night...you are one of the greats!!

I would have to Sutliff is tops and Sterling is a great second! I need to try Sterling, Wilke, Boswell, and a few other small shop blends. What are your Sterling recommendations? I like pretty much everything, except heavy aros these days.

I like pretty much everything, except heavy aros these days. Double Eagle .. Golden Eagle .. are both outstanding light aromatics..cube cut burley blends. The Va/Per blend is quite nice, it has a light..Very light flavoring to it. Royal London Dock and Richmond are good.. Briar Creek Natural is good... Klomppen Kloggen is a nice aromatic. What is really nice, you can get three 1 Oz samples for $7 in the door.

zambini will have a cow at my choice. He would guess me at Sutliff, but C&D is my favorite or future favorite. Reasons: First, I consider Sutliff and MacBaren separate. This is because tomorrow they just may be. Peter Stokkabye has some of his stuff blended by Sutliff. There's a lot of incest in this biz. If you look over the list of all of Sutliff tobaccos, they are actually short on English compared to C&D Bulk and Tinned. Most of the English at Sutliff are American English Codger mixes. C&D gives us Rajah's, Star of the East, Orient Express. Oh, I am lumping Balkan in with English for numbers purposes. The few I listed.. oh, Byzantium. And they have a ton of flavored Aros. They also have their series like the Old Timers. Several Burleys. I just don't think you can outnumber them in any way.

Oh yeah, I forgot about K&K! I'd put them pretty high even if just for McConnell's Oriental, but they make so much good stuff.

If we're talking Arango here, I thought it was Peter Stokkebye blending it for Arango. Is that not correct? ...not sure, Cramp... I thought I knew what was what, but apparently, I'm full of shite... They make a pill for that. And a candy bar! 🤠😉
