...Sutliff seems to be doing what pipe smokers want... (which is what any business worth it's salt would)... Balkan Supreme, IMHO, is a home-run... I like "Molto Dolce" and several of their other offerings... and now they're doing "kake"... Sutliff/Mac Baren has their "shite" together... Balkan Supreme is made by Orlik.

I've only been back in the pipe smoking hobby since July/August of this year. 35 years ago, my selection was thin and I ended up smoking straight Latakia as it kept my pipes dry and "sweet". Or so I thought.
Now there are so many great choices regardless of your location through the world of online tobacco. I really like Peter Stokkebye LBF, but haven't tried the other flakes, so I'm not sure about PS in general. I've tried a couple of PS English blends, they are good but I haven't reordered them. Seattle Pipe Club has some very good blends, but are a bit pricey without bulk buying. MacBaren has some awfully good blends - Navy Flake and HH Burley in particular.
I suppose since I have to pick one, I would go with Sutliff - so many choices and bulk pricing. Hard to beat.
But, like I said, I'm in the experimenting mode right now and stashing some to build up my cellar.

Mine was McClelland because of their orientals. Nowadays I'm experimenting with D & R orientals mixed with McClelland reds. So I guess they're still my favorite.

My favorite blend is ODF but I dont enjoy their other blends. If I were to pick one manufacturer it would be Gawith and Hoggarth.

I guess for me it would be Russ O's blends. But recently I've been smoking more and more different Sutliff aromatics, so that might change. Then again, it might not change. You know who manufactures a lot of Russ's blends?

Balkan Supreme is made by Orlik. ...well, if that's true, the lines are blurring and consolidation is consolidating in on itself... If we're talking Arango here, I thought it was Peter Stokkebye blending it for Arango. Is that not correct?

The pipe tobacco industry has consolidated so much that there aren't too many second-rate players left in the market.ย It would be easier to name manufacturers that don't produce one of my favorite blends. Thatโs an easy one for me.......Borkum Riff Haha. I posted this in a another thread a couple months ago: when I first got a halfway decent pipe, probably 15 years ago, I bought a bug tub of Borkum Ruff Bourbon Whiskey to go with it. I opened that sucker up, and IMMEDIATELY knew I'd made a grievous error. That thing hung around, untouched, for years there after, as a reminder to never buy a big tub of anything, until you try the little tub.

For me, has to be C&D. I smoke more of their stuff than any other. Too bad they don't have an equal to MacB ODF, though.

You know who manufactures a lot of Russ's blends? Yes, I do. I remember that years ago someone wrote deprecatingly of Sutliff and Russ replied defending that manufacturer, mentioning too that he used their tobacco for his own blends. That was indeed ironic, as were posts by smokers who love Park Lane tobaccos but hated MacBaren and referred to it as MacBitey, without knowing that Park Lane uses MacBaren tobacco. There's a moral lesson to be found there, somewhere, I guess. In this case you chose the wrong example for me, by happenstance, as I love most of Russ's blends, but I can't abide Angler's Dream. Another lesson there too, I guess.

...whoever is in charge of Mac Baren (who last I heard, owns Sutliff) knows exactly what they're doing... and they are doing it well... If you scroll down in the thread to the picture of the guy, Harald Halberg is the head honcho and CIO...a really hands on guy without seeming as if a micro-managing type guy...I think he is one of the types that hires smart people and turns them loose to do their job without riding them like rented mules.... (like so many failed managers that I have seen over the years).Per Jensen serves as the voice for MacBaren and seems to be the public relations guy who does the rollouts of the MacBaren blends. thebriarpatchforum.com/thread/4002/looks-end-macbaren-vintage-syrianI think...Mac Baren is still a private company not answerable to short term shareholders that allows them to make better decisions with long term goals instead of worrying about quarterly reports. I think...that in the merger, Mac Baren is the big dog, and through the course of them actions it really opened Sutliff up to processes and leaf that beforehand may not have been available, and capital which gives them more room with which to operate more flexibly. I put the " think" in bold, because I think I am right about it all based on a memory collage of interviews with per Jensen, Brian Levine's comments as an employee, and the newsletters I have received from Sutliff. I will see Brian next week, I am going to ask him a few questions about the above 'thinks" of mine posted.

Yeah, I've always found Stokkebye's structure to be very confusing but BS and the other high quality non aro's have always been made in Denmark by Orlik it was formerly branded Stokkebye BS.

Excellent post. Further confirmation that Sutliff has improved significantly in recent years or so, mostly thanks to MacBaren.

I don't know if this settles it, but I did some Googling, and it seems the consensus is it is Stokkebye blended. Apparently, whoever sells it decides on whose moniker is applied. SP sells Arango, P&C just calls it "Balkan Supreme", and 4 Noggins sells it as Stokkebye. www.reddit.com/r/PipeTobacco/comments/875to8/mr_paisleys_tobaccompendium_arango_balkan_supreme/

In the linked back thread I posted above about harald Halberg, one thing I forgot to add: That was a wake up call to Harald Halberg, and had quite an effect on how he operated after that as far as having other options in light of political situations, and warehousing tobacco far out into the future.
I just hope he has plenty of redundant safeguards in his storage facility regarding fire safety, it would be a crying shame if something like what took place with Russ O's warehouse on a MacBaren scale of inventory.

I guess that to answer the question, it has to be Sutliff, they reached out to our club, is graciously sponsoring us and more tobacco is enroute for our next meeting...I am hoping it is the new releases.
And...I am finding for myself that some of their blends have been under my radar.

Balkan Supreme used to be made by Peter Stokkebye and I believe it still is. Arango's moniker on it is new (last few years) to me.
