From all I have heard it is a great bike. I always wanted a R1200C. Just big, heavy, not optimal rider position. Too much of the HD influence. When I think BMW Motorrad: I found it very comfortable. I was long past racing.

Finally figured out image posting for this forum. Here is my 2021 R18 Classic imgur.com/a/g8J1JM7Thought I did. Don’t know how to get the image to display on its own So, tell us about it. How does it compare to other bikes you have had? I have only had Harleys. I love the bike, but the BMW poorly engineered this one. The windshield is supposed to be for touring. It isn’t. It is horrible. It is 3 or 4 inches too short. It aligns with the fork and funnels air, causing wind buffeting to the helmet and I am only 5’10. Never a problem with a Harley windshield. The heel/toe shifter is too short on the pegs. The engine is lower than the frame, so you need a BMW scissor jack to do a simple oil change. Dealer cost is $1200, I haven’t checked msrp. The oil filter is at the bottom of the engine and is recessed. The lift point is the exhaust mount. To do front end work or a tire change you will need a hoist to lift the front end up. Valve clearance check is every 6k. I am not impressed with the German engineering. The fork rake is too high, making u turns really wide. During September 11, 2001 HD donated many Harleys to the NYPD. BMW also donated @30 R1200c’s. The NYPD never used the BMW’s as they were trained on Harley’s. They ended up going to the NYC Sheriffs, government repo men. It was a great gesture by BMW.

BMW wanted the HD influence. They want to get into the US cruiser market.

I was working for a BMW dealership back when BMW tried to enter the cruiser market with the R1200c. It wasn't for me, but we had a dedicated few customers who loved theirs. We also sold police bikes to a few departments. These were based on the RT series. A few were skeptical at first, but most of the motor officers found them to be quite capable machines, and came to prefer them to the HD's. An exception being some of the State patrol officers who preferred their Harleys (though they never actually rode the BMW's AFAIK). I'll throw in a pic of my '74 R90/6. This was my trip bike until I replaced it a few years ago with the ST4. I'd still be comfortable taking it on a long trip.

Also the Valkarie Rune. So with good engineering you can do wonders. I have to wonder what happened to the Germans. Mercedes has long been known as the car most likely to leave you on the side of the road. The R69 I had was great to ride, cheap to maintain and dependable. It had a huge wind shield and fairing that worked.

I've heard that Harley sells more bikes in Germany than BMW. I guess I can see why.

Great looking bike Rattlesnake! The R1200RT’s are popular here in NJ PDs. The NJ State Police use Harleys and usually just for ceremony. BWW is plagued with constant recalls. The K1600s have trans recalls where they need to be opened up and rebuilt. Brake caliper recalls for the various new models, where calipers are replaced. Fuel pump recalls going back 15 years. BMW is a mess. The smaller models are made in Thailand, India and scooters are made in China I will probably pay this off and trade it in on a Harley. I can’t lose with the price I paid.

Do yourself a favor and look at some of new Triumphs, like the Thunderbird or Rocket III.

Why do people get offended when I refuse to ride with their loud motorcycles? I don't care what brand they ride, but I don't want a headache while I'm riding. Do they think that everyone loves the sound of straight pipes?

Do they think that everyone loves the sound of straight pipes? Straight Pipes and otherwise modified exhaust are a peeve of mine. Sadly, the law preventing same is not enforced in New Mexico! I remember when I had straight pipes on my HD WL. Stopped and ticketed by the CHP and sent for a week on the County work crew by the Magistrate. I was 19 years old and not 49. 59. 69, etc. In NM, no one cares. The noise is deafening around Memorial Day weekend when hundreds pass by here on their way to Red River.

It got so bad in the Hill Country that locals were oiling the tight curves until a couple of BMW riders were killed. When there is a rally in Galveston, we have a constant roar for a week before and after.

When there is a rally in Galveston, we have a constant roar for a week before and after. Tragic. The least offensive motorcycle on the road! Considering that Texas has so many counties and each one is fully staffed with a Sheriff and Deputies, why not a road block at the county line and refuse entrance to those in violation of the modified exhaust ordinance? This assuming such law is on the books. We cannot do that here because there are only a handful of deputies and most of them ride those noisy buggers.

Top Ten Reasons Why Harley Riders Don't Wave Back 10. Afraid it will invalidate warranty. 9. Leather and studs make it too heavy to raise arm. 8. Refuse to wave to anyone whose bike is already paid for. 7. Afraid to let go of handlebars because they might vibrate off. 6. Rushing wind would blow scabs off the new tattoos. 5. Angry because they just took out second mortgage to pay luxury tax on new Harley. 4. Just discovered the fine print in owner's manual and realized H-D is partially owned by Honda. 3. Can't tell if other riders are waving or just reaching to cover their ears like everyone else. 2. Remembers the last time a Harley rider waved back, he impaled his hand on spiked helmet. 1. They're too tired from spending hours polishing all that chrome to lift their arms.
Top Ten Reasons Why Gold Wing Riders Don't Wave Back 10. Wasn't sure whether other rider was waving or making an obscene gesture. 9. Afraid might get frostbite if hand is removed from heated grip. 8. Has arthritis and the past 400 miles have made it difficult to raise arm. 7. Reflection from etched windshield momentarily blinded him. 6. The espresso machine just finished. 5. Was actually asleep when other rider waved. 4. Was in a three-way conference call with stockbroker and accessories dealer. 3. Was distracted by odd shaped blip on radar screen. 2. Was simultaneously adjusting the air suspension, seat height, programmable CD player, seat temperature and satellite navigation system. 1. Couldn't find the "auto wave back" button on dashboard.
Top 10 Reasons Sport bikers Don't Wave: 10. They have not been riding long enough to know they're supposed to. 9. They're going too fast to have time enough to register the movement and respond. 8. You weren't wearing bright enough gear. 7. If they stick their arm out going that fast they'll rip it out of the socket. 6. They're too occupied with trying to get rid of their chicken strips. 5. They look way too cool with both hands on the bars or they don't want to unbalance themselves while standing on the tank. 4. Their skin tight-Kevlar-ballistic-nylon-kangaroo-leather suits prevent any position other than fetal. 3. Raising an arm allows bugs into the armholes of their tank tops. 2. It's too hard to do one-handed stoppies. 1. They were too busy slipping their flip-flop back on.
Top Ten Reasons Why BMW Riders Don't Wave Back 10. New Aerostich suit too stiff to raise arm. 9. Removing a hand from the bars is considered "bad form." 8. Your bike isn't weird enough looking to justify acknowledgment. 7. Too sore from an 800-mile day on a stock "comfort" seat. 6. Too busy programming the GPS, monitoring radar, listening to ipod, XM, or talking on the cell phone. 5. He's an Iron Butt rider and you're not!. 4. Wires from Gerbings is too short. 3. You're not riding the "right kind" of BMW. 2. You haven't been properly introduced. 1. Afraid it will be misinterpreted as a friendly gesture.
Top Ten Reasons Why Dual Sport Riders Don't Wave Back 10. Vibration of knobby tires prevented the rider from taking his hand off the bars. 9. MX style safety gear was too bright to see you wave. 8. His front fender prevents you seeing him wave back. 7. Was too busy configuring his GPS/Enduro Roll/FishFinder. 6. His rain/wind/thorn/bug/bird proof thousand-dollar jacket won't allow it. 5. Was too busy re-arranging his 500 pounds of soft-sided luggage. 4. Doesn't recognize a wave in any language other than German. 3. Too busy splitting lanes/filtering through traffic. 2. One handed wheelies are not easy. 1. On single-track trails you stop, not wave.
Top Ten Reasons Why Spyder Ryders Don't Wave Back 10. They'll NEVER be able to find the horn or turnsignal again, if they move their hand on the grip. 9. They keep a "Death Grip" on the bars in case of the dreaded DPS failure. 8. They were too busy trying to figure out how to change playlists on their I-Pod. 7. They were "Bluetoothing" with their dealer regarding the latest farkle delivery. 6. They couldn't find the "Auto-Wave" Button. (Hey; It's a Limited!) 5. Their passenger was distracting them with some nonsense about "Having to stop for a break"... 4. They were mentally rehearsing the "explanation", that they'll need to give their Spouse for the last Farkling episode. 3. They were trying to remember the best way to cross Nebraska. (Answer: while asleep, in the back of a van!) 2. They were too terrified to take their eyes off of the display; lest the dreaded "Orange Screen of Death" make an appearance. 1. You crossed paths while they were setting the cruise control, changing the voice on their GPS, raising the windshield, and changing the volume on the radio.
Top Ten Reasons Why Conventional Trike Riders Don't Wave Back 10. Their arms were too tired to raise... no power steering! 9. Your "Unusual" configuration has them confused. They thought you were going the other way! 8. They just had hit a pothole, and felt their first bad "Head-Shake". They're not letting go of anything! 7. They are lost in thought: How much is their Trike worth on trade, for a new Spyder? 6. They're still laughing at thgemselves for trying to put their feet down at the last stoplight. 5. The last time they waved at a "foreign" bike; their riding buddies made them buy the beer! 4. Didn't know WHAT you were, as you went by. 3. They only wave at conventionals... 2. They thought that their passenger waved... (She was asleep!) 1. The glare from all of the chrome had them momentarily blinded.

They changed in 2008.

If he had been wearing a helmet. If they had anything better than a padded leather brain bag for a helmet, he might have survived that crash and avoid the 21 inch skull fracture which killed him. Still one of the most beautiful motorcycles ever built.

I read the legend of the large black Rolls seen leaving the accident scene some sixty years ago. The story persists. Who knows! Who will tell? Only The Shadow knows for sure.

Although I don't know anything about the new, <10 years old Harleys. I think that they are much improved. And the new Honda Goldwings have a few issues. Park a new Harley over a clean space for a few years. If there is still no oil spot then Honda must have an interest.

Hey Ron, I need a new seat for my '06 GL1800 ... anyone in your MC maybe have one to sell? Thanks! Btw ... non-wavers list was hilarious! 😄 I have a king-size XL that I haven't tried yet. My club died of Covid-19. We had 50+ members, but not being able to meet for 2 years messed it up. I have a new Magna seat if you think it would help 🤔😉🤠 There are all kinds on eBay at all prices. It might be a opportunity for a custom seat. They also have new seat covers if you're cover is worn out.
