How many of you fine pipe smoking lads and lassies, enjoy the Victorian elegance of a fine revolver? I have pistols and revolvers both. Each has it's merits. Here is what I picked up today. A Ruger GP100 in 44 Special. Stock image of one, as I haven't taken a shot of it yet.

Beautiful, Don. I love a Ruger revolver. And I like the polished stainless steel. Here's my Ruger GP100 with the old style Lett grips in 357 magnum. This model is known for its dark (almost black) finish. I bought this at a drug store several years ago while picking up a prescription for the wife. (She never asked me to fetch a prescription for her again).

Is there any benefit to revolvers over ones that take a clip (sorry, I'm not sure of terminology)?
Or is it a matter of preference?

A revolver is generally less prone to mechanical malfunction. It is a simpler design. But for concealed carry, it is not ideal as it is bulky and heavy, holds fewer rounds, and reloading takes longer. A slim pistol is more concealable, most magazines for these hold 7+ rounds (some many more than 7), and slipping a full magazine into one only takes 2 or 3 seconds. And as I look more closely at Don's revolver, it looks like Ruger's "brushed" stainless and not the "polished" stainless. It is a beauty, Don.

I have a Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum that my grandpa left me, it's a cannon, but a beautiful one. I also have a .32 and .38 that my ex-wife's grandfather carried when he was the police chief. When we got divorced I tried to give the guns to her dad and he told me to keep them and give em to my oldest 2 boys (her sons as well) since he doesn't have a son.
I like revolvers more.

Long time ago I bought a Taurus .44 Stainless Revolver, 4 inch barrel, later I’ll try for a picture.

Nice Ruger, Don. My daily carry is a Taurus .38 5-shot revolver with +P hollow point rounds. I've always preferred the revolver for dependability and ruggedness.

Revolvers can also fire more powerful rounds than pistols, though pistols are catching up, with rounds like the 460 Rowland. Still, I would hate to see the pistol that could shoot a round like a 500 Smith and Wesson.
I have a several, a 4"38 Special, a light weight 44 magnum snub nose, a Ruger Blackhawk in 44 Special, a NAA mini in 22lr and 22 mag, and a Heritage Rough Rider in 22lr and 22 mag. I can shoot a pistol more accurately than a revolver and I have more pistols. They are better for concealed carry. The NAA Mini is good for concealed carry if you're just wearing a bathing suit. You can even take it in the pool. 😁

I love revolvers, can't stand auto's with there jumpy recoil. Had quite a few in my day and the longer the barrel the more I loved it. Yeah I know, kinda hard to conceal but, then again I don't care to conceal nor carry in public. If I were though I'd probably go with a S&W .32 cal. revolver like I had years ago. Use to have a stainless steel Interarms Virginia Dragoon .44 Mag. with a 8-3/8" barrel, love that piece.

Here it is, it's my bedside hogleg. I like it, Brad. Stainless makes even more sense where you live. Humidity would cause me to go with mostly stainless handguns. In the late nineties, we moved to Houston for a couple of years. I learned the hard way that my dry Western habit of wiping my blued guns down with an oily rag every few months was not adequate.

A nice looking piece of Iron, Don! Some years back Ruger had some issues, but under changed leadership, that is way back in the rearview mirror, and they are making great guns. I carry a Ruger LCR with Crimson Trace Lasergrips in .38 as a backup gun in an ankle holster.....this makes for a more productive time at the range. I have Very old Colt police positive in 32WCF that was my wife's grandmothers dads...He was a Salt Lake Police detective, he never had to draw his gun while serving....but the barrel was not taken care of, and the insides got rusted....they stopped making barrels many moons ago.

I have quite a few guns, but I just carry a knife.
I have a couple revolvers- Both Taurus. The .357 sees a lot more time at the range (camp) than the .44, but I'm a daisy with both.
Also, pistols have come a long way. They don't jam like the old Colt 1911s and Beretta 9mms of yesteryear. If your new Sig or Glock jams, you can probably get it replaced. I actually have a S&W polymer frame 9mm that I have put a few thousand rounds through (favourite plinker) without a single jam and I don't really even clean it- Aside from swabbing the barrel and maybe an occasional wipe down.
Another solid bonus of a revolver is ease of use. I think the average citizen in their first shootout is like going to forget how to chamber a round- That or accidentally release the mag. haha All things considered, if I had to take one into a real situation on the front lawn, I'd go with the .357. I feel like I can do more with 8 rounds in that revolver than 15 in my pistol.
And revolvers are just cooler.
That Coke is a 2litre by the way. haha

There are clips though when referring to rifles....a lot of the ammo came on stripper clips back in the day. En Bloc clip for the M1 Garand on the left, stripper clip on the right. Some revolver shooters use half moon and full moon clips for reloading. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clip_(firearms)

trailboss That dude is insane! On clips. If I were teaching a class on pistols, I would call it a magazine, but like all words in the dictionary, once something has been used long enough and it is recognized, it becomes a word. IMO, I always thought clip was a good way to save yourself four syllables in a firefight. Clip= pistol magazine and Mag= rifle magazine.

Last day of vacation time...come Monday, I will be singing the blues. Paddy, when you hear politicians and media folk report on a shooting, as they refer to "clips" it is out of sheer ignorance, when they refer to a semi auto as full auto, when they suggest that a semi auto is only useful for military, when they refer to a gun based on aesthetics as an "assault weapon". The Colt M4 that I have, the standard magazine holds 30 rounds, but it is referred to as high capacity. When these terms get used, typically a gun owners ears perk up, and a desire to correct...I do it all the time to my TV. I say out of sheer ignorance on politicians and media, but they have been corrected over and over again, but they refuse to change their narrative. When someone like you refers to them as clips, it is understandable, but understandable when someone tries to clarify it.

Loading magazines on range detail in the Army really took the fun out of shooting. haha Yeah, when I got my first Garand, I convinced some neighbor kids that loading my En Bloc clips at a nickel per clip they were on their way to being Scrooge McDuck swimming in money. After a few hours they said that detail sucked and they were outta there. The Lula loaders are really nice for pistol magazines, my Ruger SR9C came with one.
