Most game officers have quick access to a rifle. The pistol is mostly for Bad Actors. The carrying capacity of service-grade autoloaders makes it highly unlikely that LEOs will ever leave those platforms.

Not always the case, I know of at least 6 people that have firearms made by heirloom Precision that carry them...and they are proficient. I carry a Nighthawk Custom which is very nice *and 100% reliable, but my dream is a Burton/Heirloom Precision Government 1911 That is, without a a doubt, my way top and above all Grail Gun. A Nighthawk is beyond my dreams and finances. Luckily, it won't kill any better than my Tisas. But it is prettier.

Just a kind of generalized word-to-the-wise about posts relating to firearms and self-defense issues: never use the word “kill.” If you are ever unlucky enough to have to use a firearm to defend yourself you will be using it to STOP the illegal attack. Not to kill, or wound, etc. You do not intend to kill your attacker, but to stop him. If a prosecutor comes after you EVERYTHING about you will be up for grabs, including your ‘net postings. If you have mentioned “killing” with your gun it will be used against you. Just sayin’…

It was interesting to see a revolver again.

I hope he never has to use it against a gang of poachers. Really? A Mini-14, instead of an AR? That surprises me.

I should have said "equally effective".

A Mini-14, instead of an AR? That surprises me. They look safer. I have both platforms. For real “serious” work I would choose the Mini. Despite its deficiencies in the accuracy department I consider it more dependable than the AR. It reliably feeds whatever it’s given. I have had stoppages with the AR. Never one with the Mini.

I only have one AR, no mini 14, but the LE Colt 6920 SOCOM with a Trijicon ACOG has never had a feeding failure, and in the accuracy department it is almost boring to shoot at any range that I might find myself in. And the collapsible stock makes it easy for the wife to shoulder. She still prefers the M1 carbine though.

Not highly accurate but good enough for me. I preferred the SKS, Tula made, and with a banana magazine.

Camping once on Jicarilla land I was visited by a rez cop. He had an AR on a rack in his truck.

The ex and I were there for a coupla weeks. (I had friends on the rez.) He just checked to see we were OK and our permit was in order. He was actually a nice young man and we had a pleasant conversation.

I have a Ruger new model, super Blackhawk Bisley .44 magnum that is my saddle side arm. It only has a three and three-quarter inch barrel, so it’s super easy to carry. I dropped it off this week at the local gunsmith to have him clean up the action a little bit. I don’t want some kind of silly two pound trigger on it because it is for practical use, I told him to just smooth it, and slick it up.

You are a gentlemen compared to some of our borrachos with bad attitudes. They fare poorly on the Jicarilla Rez.

The Jicarillas have plenty of their own borachos and need no imports.

Beautiful! Uberti? When I was 15 my gun-mentor gave me one. A battlefield pick-up. It was kinda rough, but I carried it for a couple of years before a Blackhawk came along. Have fun with it!

You nailed it, Bob! 1861 Navy in 36. I’ve never had a 36. Should be fun.

Dang! I missed it. I thought it was an 1860 Army.
36s are a lot of fun. I once had an original Navy Colt. Lent it to a “friend” and never saw it again.

The term “six-shooter” originated with them. The Navy and Army Colts had a small pin on the back of the cylinder, between the nipples on which the caps were place. The hammer had a small hole that engaged the pin, making them safe to carry with six rounds loaded. When the SAA cartridge revolver arrived that feature did not survive, making them unsafe to carry with a fully loaded cylinder. Many original Colt c&b guns have had those pins worn or broken off, so they are no longer “six-shooters.” My 1860 had no pins remaining so it, too, was a five-shooter. (Remingtons has a slot between chambers that the hammer nose fitted into so thaty, too, were six-shooters.)

The 1858 Remington revolvers are really beautiful guns. They were more popular with field grade officers than the down-and-dirty guys. They were so finely fitted that their tolerances caused them to “bind up” with fouling very quickly. The Colts, much looser, were preferred.

I prefer the aesthetics of the Colts, but also like the Remington.
