I had the original Ruger Old Army, largely based on the Remington 1858, with adjustable sites. The hammer slots were greatly appreciated. I still have a metal cartridge conversion cylinder for it if I ever find another one.

This is my next purchase. Open top C Mason conversion in 38 Special. Should be fun.

I bet you’re gonna stay far away from +P! Yes. I don’t even shoot +P much in my 38s that are strong enough for it. This one will be for plinking and admiring.😉

Resurrected again! Picked up this Uberti Colt copy last week. In 44 Special. The Open Top 1872 in 38 Special will have to wait.

Great cartridge and a fine platform. I might be a bit leery of Elmer’s and Skeeter’s 44SPec loads though.

I get that, Ron. The Ruger is a stronger piece for heavy loads but the Colt pattern is just so sweet to hold and to shoot. They feel so natural in the hand.

Ruger’s New Model Vaquero is near-identical to the frame and grip of the SAA.

Ruger’s New Model Vaquero is near-identical to the frame and grip of the SAA. Well, it's supposed to be the same as the New Model Blackhawk and I find it feels completely different from the Colt. I dunno.

No, not the same as the NMB. Different frame and grip. I’ve compared them to original Colts and they are just about identical. Grips feel the same. They are also not up to the loads that the NMB and OMV can take easily.

They are also not up to the loads that the NMB and OMV can take easily. Very close. Top strap is much beefier on the Ruger. Ruger is heat-treated investment cast and very strong. Colt’s are forged. I prefer the action on the Colt but realize it is weaker. I can’t really justify the price of a real Colt though. Even a 3rd gen. Therefore, it has been Rugers or Ubertis for me, over the years.

I have owned two Super Single Sixes, a flat-gate Single Six, a 50th Anniversary Single Six, two Blackhawks, one Super Blackhawk, one Bisley Blackhawk, a Freedom Arms Model 97, a 3rd Gen Colt SAA and now this Uberti Colt clone. I only really miss the Bisley Blackhawk and the 50th Anniversary SS.

At the very least, Ron, you can see the grip is nothing like the NMB and virtually identical to the Colt. Having handled both, side by side, I would say the Ruger’s grip is a tiny bit smaller than the Colt’s.

The original Vaquero did not feel the same as a Colt, but when they gave it its own smaller frame, it became much handier and very similar feeling to the Colt. I wish Rugers didn’t all end up with the drag mark on the cylinder though.

Having handled both, side by side, I would say the Ruger’s grip is a tiny bit smaller than the Colt’s. The new, small frame Blackhawk has exactly the same grip frame as the New Vaquero. They still make the New Model Blackhawk in the larger frame size with a different grip. I have the 44 special with the small frame. No Ruger-only loads.
