It's a forum Q, we repeat everything about 10000 times regardless of the topic. A morta will be my next pipe purchase I understand but when you have gone over similar ground a few times, it gets tiring. lol You're dealing with somebody who hasn't slept in days, let alone decades. Careful I don't drag you down...

Impossible.... I hope you find what you are looking for and am glad to be of any help. One reason I started this thread was to open up the discussion, as I had my doubts, and debate this topic. In the end, my desire and goal is to help Patch members find a Morta pipe or two at a cost that is affordable. . No offense was intended or taken theloniousmonkfish ... PS These pipes are not top of the line either. But at the price they are selling for, I would not expect them to be.

Has anyone smoked one of these Polish pipes yet?

I just got two of them. The billiard style smokes great but the poker's chamber diameter is too small for it's depth and have to constantly relight it. I might try to drill it out a little larger and see if it's real morta.

Well, they certainly look decent. That flared shank on the Billiard is a nice touch. Are all the pipes on offer, Nosewarmer ?
Thanks for the feedback/report.

They both are near 6 inches in length. I was surprised by their size when I got them compared to the pics of them.

I want to hear a real review, how's the draw, finishing inside the bowl, finish of the button, ease of passing a pipe cleaner. Any noticeable taste or smell. I haven't seen anything like that.

If inquiring minds want to know I'll do my best. They have some type of black finish in the bowl I wet my finger and rubbed the inside and it came out black. I removed as much as I could. The billiard passes a pipe cleaner no problem but the bent poker wont. Both pipes clench easily and have a nice draw after taking the filter out. I smoked a couple bowls each of Amphora Burley in both and didn't notice any off flavors or smells. I smoke a hot pipe and these smoked cool and the bowl was only warm to the touch compared to most of my briars being hot. As I noted earlier I am going to try reaming out the poker's chamber because I can only get my pinky in it to the first knuckle. It's barely a 1/2 inch diameter. Overall they smoke pretty decent for a couple pipes I have invested $36.50 for the pair.

Excellent article at pipedia.org - enter Morta in search. The detailed information is the link provided: Creating Pipes from Morta by Trever Talbert.
Harvesting is far more challenging than buying briar blocks. Several very good pointers for anyone working with Morta in the Talbert entry.

I just got two of them. The billiard style smokes great but the poker's chamber diameter is too small for it's depth and have to constantly relight it. I might try to drill it out a little larger and see if it's real morta. Β You might not have caught one of my earlier posts concerning these pipes. I believe I cautioned folks about potential pipe bowl size issues. One of the two pipes, I directly tested/smoked, had a much smaller bowl than I expected; namely the "chamber diameter is too small for it's depth ".Β I use that pipe for Virginia blends and have had some success after getting used to packing it just right.Β However, to err on the side of cation, one shouldΒ examineΒ the pictures closely , perhaps ask a question about the bowls measurements etc., before biding.Β Β Drilling the pipes is one thing I did not do. All five pipes that I have on hand have theΒ feel, weight,Β texture, appearance that speaks of Morta qualities (On the two pipes I have tested/smoked, IΒ did a stain test applying high-grade alcohol to the bowl's exterior. The pipes do not appear to be painted or stained, as nothing came off the pipes' exterior after multiple applications and rubbing with a cloth. ).Β The Turkiewicz pipes I own even differ a bit among the same shape designation,Β speaking to a more home grown, less mass produced, process. What did you think of the feel etc. of your pipes? Β My interactions with Robert, owner of the eBay seller account turkiewicz-pipes and further research informs me that we are dealing with the carver, one of some experience. It appears that the seller is Robert Turkiewicz a noted person/carver with Mr Brog pipes (at least at one time), whose pipes are also featured through Balandis (All the above and more are documented in the thread). As such the lower cost can be explained readily by these connections, the inexpensive stems used, Morta farming in Europe and the Polish economy. Did you note the address/stamps on the packaging (where the pipes were shipped from)? Does the pipes' styling remind you of any Chinese fakes that you have encountered? DoΒ the pipes have that home spun quality that speaks of being something other than mass production (as far as pipe factories go)? In my research, I have found that most Chinese fakes ship from China (Exceptions being the sale of previously purchased pipes and a few online pipe sellers, outside of China, that buy from China), conform to a few standard shapes which appear to be fairly consistent, probably due to a more automated processes, like those found in larger pipe houses. I am curious to know your thoughts.

It is good to hear that, so far, much of what you state is similar to my own findings (partially documented earlier in the thread). I did notice an odd but fairly subtle flavor when smoking one of my pipes. Since then it has gone away. It was probably due to some other issue or issues. PS A cooler bowl (relative to the same pipe in Briar, for example.) is characteristic of Morta pipes. This alone does not prove that the pipe is made of Morta. I am pointing this out to say, it was a collection of these hmm moments that made me fairly confident that we are dealing with a Morta pipe (I make no claims as to the quality or age.) , though I am open to correction.

Has anyone smoked one of these Polish pipes yet? I've smoked two bowls in my straight Polish 135 Morta. Once the charcoal filter was removed it had a good draw and it smokes really well. No odd taste at all, just straight tobacco flavour. It's a good pipe at a great price.

A cool to warm exterior and a dry finish are two prime Morta characteristics.

Exactly what I was thinking. I've got a few pipes with narrow bowls. They aren't suited to flakes for example but are really good for blends that can be codger filled/gravity fed ['m not familiar with the name of the cut - Carter Hall is one example] In fact blends that are loose and more finely cut, smoke best in a narrow bowl.

A cool to warm exterior and a dry finish are two prime Morta characteristics. Yes and so far these pipes exhibit both qualities. PS. I made the comparison to a similarly constructed briar pipe as to give perspective. I have briars whose bowls smoke fairly cool, but they are typically thicker walled.

As I have over 4lb of flake there's no need for me to stretch it as I do with some of my less plentiful blends by smoking it in smaller bowls. We tend to be creatures of habit. I'm so used to separating the strands of flake a little, then folding and stuffing into a larger bowl, that I haven't even considered chopping any up for a narrow or smaller bowl.

I use a coffee grinder to break up my flakes and some of my more corse tobaccos. Makes them a little like Carter Hall and I just pour the tobacco in the pipe.

There's a bent Poker Morta up for auction. It's day 7 and it's already $23.50. I'm expecting a lot of competition for this one. Anyone else have a bid already on the Poker? Four days to go before the auction concludes and the Bent Poker is up to $38. It would not surprise me if it goes for $50 or more. The bent Poker sold for $43. Still, not a bad price considering what it is.

I got my cheap apple morta pipe from Poland today. Chunked the filter and cleaned it with 151 rum. The stem is decent if somewhat plasticy feeling, like a MM stem. The drilling seems OK if you don't mind the draft hole in the center bottom. (And I don't). The draft hole in the shank is slightly restricted by my standards. Thebbowl is very narrow for the style of the pipe. In cleaning the shank I went through 8 pipe cleaner before I had one that didn't come out completely black. I had to resort to rum soaked paper towels for the bowl. The wood is definitely dyed. I compared it to the simalarly sized Don Warren morta, as well as the Becker and Davorin pipes and I can say that the wood is not the same morta as the the more expensive pipes, if it even is morta. It is noticeably lighter and it doesn't have the same feel as the more expensive pipes when scraping a blade lightly over the inside of the bowl. It feels like briar while the morta pipes give a sort of a slight scraping stone feel. I smoked a bowl of Butternut Burley and I detected a medium strong chemical taste. It's not a bad pipe for the price, but it is not a bargain morta pipe.
