"Governments may think and say as they like, but force cannot be eliminated, and it is the only real and unanswerable power. We are told that the pen is mightier than the sword, but I know which of these weapons I would choose."~Sir Adrian
Watching the news this morning and a hockey team got both of their goalies injured and called in the Zamboni driver from the stands. He suited up and blocked 8 shots, winning the game. 43 years old and his first pro game. Can't imagine this in any other sport. Rodeo Houston is starting and the whole town is going crazy. It's funny to see the Indian and Vietnamese neighbors in their cowboy duds.

Son reported for work , found out it was a holiday, crept out quietly so he wouldn’t be razzed. Told him at Exxon we had one or two show up at the wrong time during daylight savings time change.
Back to sitting on my own porch instead of sitting on a stool on the 12th floor looking at a million other high-rises in downtown Miami...finally able to actually enjoy my pipe in solitude with peace and tranquility all around...no sirens, no gunshots, no people everywhere you look! Nothing beats being in your own space and time!
Just got back from helping a buddy move a bunch of old railroad crossties to his ranch. I also made an offer this morning on a big gelding a lady was trying to sell me earlier. She wanted $3,000.00. Ive offered her $700.00. She doesnt ride him any more, shes paying someone else to board him, and shes buying hay. And the rent is due.
She raised him from a baby, and he's almost 8. But she knows me, and she knows he'll go to a great home, and get used. She said she'd decide and call after work this evening.
He's worked cattle, and I've got a possible line on a job day-riding for a local ranch this summer, so it should work out for everyone.
Keepin' my fingers crossed.
If it were supposed to be easy, they'd have sent my little sister to do it.
Changed the oil on my truck today. I have put 4k on it since I got it and the oil monitor said it still had 4800 miles left. After the air filter was completely clogged and the cabin air filter was too. I have been laying awake at night thinking about the oil. The previous California lessee just reset the oil monitor. It had to have 16k miles on it from the look and feel. At least I can sleep tonight.

Is she a horse that some people would pay 3k for? Or is she really a 2k horse that needs a good home? Horses everywhere in Houston right now. Crazy time for the next month.

Not a lot of middle-of-the-road Quarter Horses for sale up here right now. Its mostly either dinks or performance horses. He's AQHA bred, but his papers were never filed, so he's considered "grade". That really dings his market value. Which is good for me, cuz I dont ride the papers. He probably could have been worth 3,000.00 up here if everything had been in order with his pedigree. He's a big, nice gelding with a good mind and cow experience.
I suspect his training has a lot of holes in it too, which isnt his fault. That would ding his value for most, but I know a guy...

So $700 isn't that much of a lowball offer. The price of horses always surprises me. I remember my friends buying good riding horses for $300 in the late 60s, and in 71 my brother paid $70k for an Arabian stallion and a mare in foal. I don't know what happened to any of them. With 10k or more horses in Houston this week, I wonder how much money it represents.

There is no "Kelly Blue Book" to go by to artificially set current market value on horses. It's most often truly relative, and a meeting of the minds between buyer and seller.

+14 degrees 30 minutes before sunset. Forecast is for -11 degrees tonight. 11 below Zero (F) is cold for me. Not complaining, just sharing the news such as it is.

It might be cold for you, but it would be death for me.
Working theory: cigar munchers have ruined this town for pipes.
Anthony’s on Grant: Blue collar working stiffs, wasting their hard earned on tobacco sticks doing their hick impressions of the Four Yorkshire Gentlemen from Monty Python. Some sad looking jars of bulk tobacco and half a handful of tins, mostly aromatics. There were some decent looking pipes, but they were all in unlit showcases making it impossible to see them clearly. The clerk was too busy selling overpriced bundles of Nicaraguan seconds to notice me so I used the toilet and left.
Hoping for a better day when I go to Jerry’s this morning.
Only -8 degrees this morning. That is a relief. SHould warm to 30 this afternoon. House was cold this morning. Electric heater on low all night in kitchen, 54 degrees this morning.
Little by little, the snow is receding and the ice is melting. Still plenty of slip hazards. Care is required while walking.
Hope you all have a great day!

Too many store clerks have not the slightest idea how to handle customers. You have a good example.
What I recall, when you entered, the clerk should have looked at you and nodded. Then, said to the cigar customers something like, "Have a close look at these and I shall return in a moment". Then, he should have made his way towards you and asked what he could do? Hearing your request, he should have said something "just one minute while I attend to these gentlemen". Returning to the cigar purchasers who should have made a decision by now, wrap up their order and get on with you. It is possible to handle multiple customers with attention and courtesy. Customers usually will wait once they have been acknowledged and greeted. Sadly, no one trains shop people and they do not learn. I have the same problem in Toad which is why I seldom visit anything other than the grocery store and walmart.

I don,t know I have three brick and mortar stores that I have been going to for several years. They are really cigar stores that dabble in pipes but hey at least they offer a place to kick back and have a smoke. But the thing these local shops sell is the experience of the shop and the array of tobacco. If you have ever walked into a vape shop with neon signs you will understand what the B/M cigar stores are selling experience wise.

You aint kidding about the vape / head shops! I walked into one last week looking for nasal snuff. I had called and the person I spoke to said they carried it. About the only pipe related item I found worth buying was pipe cleaners, which I needed anyway. In truth the guy was pretty nice and we chatted about the Navy for a minute. But the whole experience was just a little off putting for me.
Turns out whoever I spoke to was wrong, they DO carry snuff, as in hewing tobacco. Getting nasal snuff in AZ without paying ridiculous shipping seems impossible. Which means since I am just curious about it and not really needing any, AND do not even know what I would like I ain't buying.
I hope to be half as good as my dog believes me to be.

My wife and I came to a big decision today. We have been in the market for a new vehicle. Our current includes a 96 Silverado and a 2007 Camry. We were seriously considering a hybrid. But after a fair amount of research we've decided our frontrunner is a Tesla Cyber Truck. All electric, no gas, oil, tran fluid, brake fluid, etc. All wheel drive version with the current battery rated at 250 miles, but by summer 2021 when it will be ready for delivery probably have a range of 350 miles. 7500 lbs towing, 0-60 in 6.5 seconds.Might even work for interplanetary trips.
Today we went to the N. Oracle location of Anthony’s and found one (1) non-aromatic blend that I would probably not hate: Stokkebye’s Proper English. So I bought an ounce and set myself up inside the enclosure (all the cigar munchers were on the main shop floor bloviating on their lousy retrograde opinions) and packed the Tompkins Plateau with the SPE and thoroughly enjoyed it! It was lovely to make a new discovery of a nice, floral English mixture. The orientals definitely took the lead with the Latakia providing a supporting role, which suits me fine.
I enjoyed another bowl of it on the balcony of our condo before making a simple, yet delightful dinner of lentils, pickled onion, grilled tofu, cilantro, nutritional yeast (amazing stuff!) and freshly ground peppercorns.
PS-The (very) young man who waited on me at Anthony’s was a pipe smoker and had a quite solid foundation of knowledge. If I were to open a pipe shop in Tucson I would try and hire him! He saw me walk directly to the pipe area and immediately gave me his full attention.
That is the way it’s done! 😀

I hope that your current vehicles will last until Tesla actually produces the truck. Hey, somebody has to buy one, right?

He's not as young as he looks but he's probably the the best pipe ambassador in the company. Jerry's is probably the best lighted showplace for pipes. Anthony's on Broadway has the most pipes but they are mostly in dark showcases and Alex isn't really a pipe guy. Check out Crescent Tobacco on Tanque Verde. It's a "smoke shop" but they a good selection of tobacco, just not mine.
AZ is generally a very casual place but If you're looking for a more upscale, polished clientele you need to go to PHX but even that's pretty casual.
You best bet for tobacco is mail order to your resort.
Just one more reason that I will not give up on blends like Carter Hall. You cant always get want you want but you get what you need. There are many folks around who have fine collections of tobacco and still revisit the pouches on a regular basis.

I find Carter Hall hard to beat... Shame it's not available over here.
Had a short but pleasant visit from my brother Josh, whom I had entrusted my pipes and cellar to while I was in Miami, good to have my stuff back and hope to have a visit again with brother Josh soon...this time for a bit longer than today.

If a package is needed for delivery, please advise.

Left work at 3 to go to the vet. We had to say goodbye to the last of our original 4 huskies that came with us from Oregon. Sad day, but at 14 with a bad infected tumor she couldn't tolerate any surgery.
I hope to be half as good as my dog believes me to be.
