Beautiful place there, Charlie! Another beautiful day here in central north Fla. Enjoying the day sitting on the porch...admiring my newest pipe from Ron and enjoying life as it should be...worry free, good health and no bills crushing us and destroying my peace of mind. Love this new bulldog made by Ron...it is perhaps the best pipe I own...love it, love it, love it!!!

They've just announced that they are shutting down the Houston Rodeo. This is a major disaster for the vendors, many of which make their entire years income from the 3 weeks. One woman says that she has 300k invested and 12 employees. There are major concerts scheduled including Lizzo and Dirks Bently and more that people have tickets for. First time this has happened in my lifetime. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houston_Livestock_Show_and_Rodeo

Many financial and social impacts rippling through the economy, the nation and the world. Here, in my tiny part of the world, I have to decide if we should hold the annual meeting of our irrigation district. Twenty or so people in a small room. Perhaps we could hold it outside?

It is my experience that we humans have a unique ability to snatch defeat from the very jaws of victory.
I have no doubt that we can take an unfortunate virus from an unheard of corner of the globe and work really hard to turn it into a global pandemic, an economic disaster of historical proportions and the end of political and civil freedoms not found since the eastern front of the cold war. We humans are skilled that way.

They're already talking about shutting a bunch stuff down already.

We humans are skilled that way. I am not sure if I am interpreting what you wrote correctly. So, if I am off, please ignore. This pandemic is not something manufactured by the media or politicians. It is real. People are sick, people are dying. The mortality rate has been consistently around 3 percent or a little higher. For scale, Influenza is usually around 1/8 of 1 percent. This virus is a whole order of magnitude more deadly. It seems you are correct about the suspension of civil freedoms in the face of this disease. China is reporting improvement after finally taking the most draconian measures since The Cultural Revolution. We do not know how bad this will get. That is the problem with disease vectors. Minimizing the seriousness is not a solution. Taking precautions is. That does not include hoarding toilet paper. I do not need to repeat what is but for anyone confused, Wash your hands. Avoid crowds. Stop licking doorknobs. Where will we be in 30 days? I do not know. I hope we do not have Marshall Law and mass panic. There are too many impressionable and easily stampeded people these days. Let us take a breath. Stop beating up Chinese Americans. We will get through but not without some complications.

Im not saying that there is no virus, or that the virus isnt a serious problem for some. Im saying however serious the problem may be, we will somehow make it exponentially worse than it has to be. It affects lungs and sinuses mostly, or so I understand, so we exacerbate that by making all toilet paper disappear. Paper facemasks dont help, but we bought them all out anyhow, so emergency medical personell who need them in other areas have none. The stock for Corona beer is tanking, just because of the name. Chinese restaurants in the midwest of the US are sitting idle and losing revenue because...well, theres no real reason, actually. My previous post was just an idle soliloquy on the silliness of people, not a mockery of those harmed by this. I meant no disrespect to those honestly effected.

I think that is exactly what the rest of us was thinking...at least that was the way I interpreted what you said...we all know that the media loves click bait and I think a lot of the reporting has been geared to that.

I just hope we do not have to resort to the measures in China. They are seizing people suspected of being ill and throwing into the back of prison trucks taken to a concentration camp of sick and dying people.

All going according to plan with a vaccine containing your brand new microchip so you can be reeducated and wear 1970s leisure suits and prepare for the return of the alien master race who will see you as a food source. The president just said to wash your hands, cover your face and kiss your arse goodbye. While you are doing all that they plan to steal half of your 401k as the stock market burps. In other words SNAFU.

Good Morning Pipers!
I hope this finds all of you in good health.
A lovely clear morning here in New Mexarado (the NM/CO border).
Enjoy your day, wash your hands, and remain safe.

The Basketball season has been suspended.Travel from Europe has been suspended.Universities are closing. This thing is not a hoax.It is real ,and it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better. While it is true this is not a hoax, everything I've heard suggests that it is no more dangerous to the normal healthy American than the Flu. More contagious yes, but not more dangerous. It is only the very young children, the elderly and those with a compromised immune system that have any real fear. Which means that people are panicking for no good reason. Which is pretty normal for the human race...

Beautiful, sunny day this morning. Im hoping the wind stays down (this is a very windy area) and I can sit outside and enjoy a good cigar later. I sat out there in the wind the other day with one, and that was somewhat less than satisfactory.

It has been steady at 3+ per cent for weeks. Seasonal Influenza is around 1/8 of 1 percent. It is way more deadly than the flu. As usual with viruses, older people and those with weakened immune systems are the most vulnerable. The reason people are panicking is the vector, not the illness itself so much. No one knows who the carriers are. For example, an older couple in southern NM were just tested positive. They had been on a Cruise, returned home and for 10 days, interacted with people all over town. That is how the disease is spread. It is the unwitting Community Transmission.

Yea, I'm not as concerned at getting the virus than the country shutting down everything for a few weeks. Then there's the loss of wages etc for all those people who are off work, the loss of business due to absence. And over here, the majority of nurses are women... Many who have children...and if schools and childcare is shut down, who looks after the children or who looks after the patients?
