I miss typed about Marbles. We spent 45 minutes, not 4 minutes, together in his day kennel. He is stressed by all the noises at the dog shelter- barking, howling, etc. He bumped into me a few times. He will be much better off at place as it is very quiet. I can see a good dog there who needs a home. How did it go today?

Marbles is settling in just fine. He has figured out where his bed is. He can get across the room to the water pan and his feed bowl. He is learning. I am not sure how well he hears. It may be he just does not respond to sounds or he does not hear them. I cannot tell yet. His nose works. The cat population is not sure about him since he does not notice them the way my other dog does. He has a good size head with a heavy coat of fur. He bumps into furniture and posts but does not seem to pained by it. It is possible to get him a "halo" for protection but I am not sure he needs one. His adapting to new surroundings is interesting to be part of. My two other blind dogs from years ago here knew the place well before they lost their eye sight. So, it was not a challenge for them. This guy has to learn from scratch which he is doing. He should have a decent quality of life here.

Wonderful! A safe home, good food, his own bed, someone to care for him. Your karma is bound to be good.

I knew a Shar-Pei named Marbles. My pitty has driven the feral cats out.

How does he know? I mean, how does he know when I am finished eating and close to putting the plate down for him? Yeah, I know— bad habit giving a dog your plate like that. So what? He likes it. We’ve been best buds for 10 years, so he gets the plate. This morning I had steak and eggs and toasted tortillas. While I cooked he was in the bedroom which is around the corner and quite a few steps away. He did not appear. While I was eating he did not appear. Takes me about 20 minutes to eat breakfast. When does he appear? At about minute 19. Comes out, sits down politely in the living room and looks into the dinette. Waiting. How does he know?

Lacy sits, stares, and whines while we eat. 😕

And while I’m nattering on about canis domesticus I might as well mention this...
When Eli came to live with us I put some cowbells on the front door, on the inside. Whenever I would take him out for his bizness I would try to get him to ring the bells. No luck. I was sitting at the dining table last night catching up on emails after giving him his evening meal. Suddenly I heard the bells! Loud! I looked up and he was standing at the door, looking back at me. When he had my attention he punched the bells with his nose again. What a moment! I let him out, with great praise, and he went right to work. (He will be 6mos old on Thursday.)

All dogs lives matter...specially the ones in the shelter, usually through no fault of their own. So true. Marbles was picked up wandering down a road in his blind state. His human had died and so off he went in search of food. Sadly, too many people die here completely alone and unattended. Their livestock and pets suffer for it.

Who could have guessed?
Marbles loves being hand fed cut up old steak in small pieces.

Somewhere there MIGHT be a dog that does not like being hand-fed with steak, but I doubt it. Eli was 6 months old today. I took him to the vet to get an accurate weight. 47 pounds. According to the formulas for his breed he will probably end up about 65 pounds. That would be 10 pounds heavier than his dad and 10 pounds lighter than Jack. If he's heavier than his dad I will give the credit to the really good nutrition he's been getting.

I need to find spray on scents so I can mark door frames and obstacles. The Animal Sheter folks recommended lemons but that is not working. Bitter Apple is used to keep dogs away from things so that might not be the best choice.

Tosh I’ve read that you can take an orange peel and run it on whatever you don’t want him to bump into, essential oils like what you put in a lamberger lamp can also be used, hope that helps.

I tried lemon but that did not work. I will look for some scented oils. The lamp oil I have is unscented paraffin. I bet there are scent products out there for dog training.

There are articles on internet about useing scent for a blind dog, makes sense, no pun, that they could use that to identify things they don’t want to bump into.

There are various game scents available for training hunting and tracking dogs. Might not be suitable, though/

I just ordered a set of scents called "Tracerz". They are small spray bottles of oils like clove, juniper, rosemary, frankincense, almond. They come with stick on pads so they can be applied to furniture, door frames etc. That might make it easier for Marbles. The idea is to make corridors for movement. Makes sense, eh?

If I may, use some scents for different situations, like one scent for food, well maybe food has its own scent, maybe a scent for a no no area, , you get my drift. Marble is a very lucky dog to have you.

Marble is a very lucky dog to have you. That was what I was thinking. One scent for the path to the front door and outside. Another for his bed. ALthough he seems to be able to find it once his scent is on it. Another for the water bowl. Food bowl. Another for obstacles in the house. He is a good dog and worth the trouble.

You know best, I’m betting that ol’ boy could find his food and water just fine w/o using scent. Especially if they are close to his bed. So many folks giving unasked-for “advice” you’d think Marbles has a fan club!

They are remarkably resilient and adaptable. My blind dog, Dobbie, learned our entire new property, about 2 acres, within the first few months. Bless you for taking him in!

Dragged my butt from the bed to check on the thread about Marbles...so yeah, I would say that Marbles has a fan club! Our sweet lil baby has been eating what we eat since I brought her from the shelter..loves her veggies and meat and fish as well...the wonderful thing about "rescues" is the love and attention they give you and you get the opportunity to give it right back to them. Back to bed now that I know that Marbles is getting on just fine with John as provider and friend...just can't beat a good friend like Marbles...and John.

So many folks giving unasked-for “advice” you’d think Marbles has a fan club! He can find the water pan. Not so good with the food bowl. He mostly steps in it spilling all over. He needs a path in an out of the house. I imagine he would learn one by scent over time but adding strong scents dedicated to that purpose cannot hurt.

Marbles had baked chicken breast and boiled pork with a little kibble.
Yeah, that works for him. No problem finishing it all off fast. First time he has eaten with gusto. He is not for that dog food crap.
This will be a costly relationship but worth it to me. I can do with less meat at my age.
