Leftover venison chili with some crackers broken into it. Better the second day! Chili improves more than just about anything I can think of, after a day or two.

There are so many variations of chili and I have a hard time recollecting a bad bowl....I daresay that even canned chili is sometimes good just because i like the dish so much, but it pales compared to homemade. And cornbread is such a natural accompaniment.

Being a near-lifelong Southerner, you'd think I'd eaten chili with cornbread before, but I never have. It just wasn't a combo we made when I was growing up. Our chili accoutrement were crackers, cheese, and apple slices. (If you haven't tried apple slices with chili, I suggest you do. The cool/sweet/tartness really sets off the chili.)

Cornbread has a sweetness that is probably the same reason it pairs well.

I'm not a cornbread guy. We've done it plain and doctored with cheese or cheese and jalapeno rings. I like oyster crackers and cheese, maybe a little green onion on top. Never heard of apple slices.

The quality of cornbread can run the gamut....from awful to so-so to phenomenal. Kind of like so many other dishes.
But then again, it just might not be one's cup of tea.

I have made cornbread many ways. Not a fan. kind of odd since I love grits, polenta and masa harina.
Chile Con Carne with beans I enjoy with pasta, sometimes. Chopped onions, fried potatoes (French Fries), even brown rice. Chili Con Carne is a baked squash is excellent.
In all my days, I cannot recall a bad Chile Con Carne, even in the cans. It tastes good to me. SOme better than others, of course.

Hummus, green olive tapenade, chopped green chile, sliced red bell pepper and sliced cucumber. Usually on a baguette but anything could work. Nice blend of flavors!

I’m sure it’s delicious.

The only thing I miss from Panera Bread is their Mediterranean sandwich. Tabouli cheese and sprouts on whole grain bread is always a hit.

Found an old Breakfast Burrito in the freezer, to which a poached egg was added. Good enough! To save on electricity do you just unplug it and put it on the back porch November to April? When to Blue 32 and had lunch with the wife, daughter, and granddaughter. My wife and I split the Monte Cristo sandwich with fries, had a pint of Kiltlifter and a bowl of spicy chili...they always nail it on quality and service, the wife and daughter wanted to go to Kohl's across the street, I went to Fox's Cigar lounge next door to the restaurant, smoked a bowl and chatted with some British military guys out here visiting Boeing. Waiting for nightfall, all of my neighbors are cool with me lowering the boom tonight. I set off one last night and even though it was high in the sky, the shock waves hit me on the ground...definitely light and get away from these in the mortar tube...if it prematurely went off at ignition, you do not want to be near it. I learned that throwing firecrackers as a kid...it took me a few years to figure out that was a dumb idea.

We never hear fireworks here, or gunshots. It's nice compared to the old house where it sounded like a war zone and the neighbors were shooting off rockets at 2am.

I learned that throwing firecrackers as a kid...it took me a few years to figure out that was a dumb idea. I have both a refrigerator and freezer on the unheated back porch/portal. They probably do not cycle very much this time of year. I also hang food from the ceiling since it is cold enough.
