Well, I have been keeping quiet about this one, waiting to be sure it was set in stone, but I got the tracking number today for this beauty: A huge thanks goes out to Darin for tracking it down and getting me in touch with the seller. I know what I'll be smoking this weekend! Nice! Maybe I should know, but what is it?

urbino - it's the Stanwell 124 I've been trying get my hands on for years. I posted in the Wanted board a few weeks back, and Darin did a little Sherlocking and found this it. This one in particular is a Scandia, a Stanwell second, but for me that's irrelevant. It's a 124. The shape just calls to me, and I really like the red finish on this one.

I have several Scandias, and they are all excellent smokers. None are as good looking as yours though. Mine are all rusticated.

I remember you mentioning the 124 before, but don't remember seeing a pic. It's a nice looking pipe. I like the lines. And that seems like awfully nice grain for a second.

I'm pleased to say that I have almost nothing creeping through the USPS mail system at the moment. But I do have a beautiful pipe riding across the Atlantic in a German freighter, and can't wait to get a close-up look at it in a couple of months. The rustication WAS different from anything I'd seen before, but then I found another while waiting for this one. What makes it interesting (to me, anyway) is that, in addition to the meticulous and even rustication, is that when the rusticator was done, he then scratched up the high points, which are normally (with Peterson) just left smooth and glaring. He went to the same trouble with the rim, which he didn't on my other. I assume it's the same rusticator, as the pipes are both mid-late '80s.
Darn fine rustication! Never seen it so nice!
It just arrived - it's a 2.5" bowl House Pipe, close to the normal shape of the bent ones but with a stem angle too steep. It was a little dusty in the bowl, but I could see the lathe marks. So I wiped out the inside with a make-up pad and alcohol, and all that came out was some red stain - now it just smells like fresh wood. Ran a pipe-cleaner through the oxidized, but bite-mark-less stem, and nothing. The only markings on it are 'Petersons Dublin' and 'Made in the Republic of Ireland' and the stem is not bent out correctly. It has the stamped 'P' in the stem, but it was never colored in. Given all that, and the strange detailed rustication and unsmoked condition, I'm guessing it was some sort of test pipe.

The shipping gods blessed me with three packages today, thus completing all of my current orders besides the snuff. Count your blessings, indeed. I'm still waiting on that package from 4noggins. The one that shipped 2/4, made it as far as Oxford, MS, turned around and went to Springfield, MA, came back again, and has now been sitting in the local distribution center for 3 weeks without an update. Guys, I'm just about to the point where if a seller can't offer me an option other than USPS, even if it costs more, I simply can't do business with them. It can't be "We'll take your money today and you'll get your goods someday, probably, but we have no idea when." I can't do business that way.

urbino have you reached out to them about this? By now the package should have been claimed as a loss and reshipped, there is no reason anything should take a month. I used to do alot of business with 4N back when Rich was still running it, but it's been a while. I would think the current crew would still try to get this resolved for you.

I didn't intend to dump on any specific business, but I have reached out to them. When I finally got a response, it amounted to, "It sucks to be you. Good luck!" What peeved me and triggered my previous post was I put in an order yesterday with SP. At checkout, nothing indicated whether they would use USPS or UPS, and I had no option to choose. Got the shipping notice a little while ago. Guess which one they used. The problems at the USPS aren't the fault of SP or 4noggins, but they're going to have to adjust to a new reality. At this point, if you're going to use USPS, you have to at least tell me you're going to do it before you get my money.

I have ordered twice from SP during the whole weather crisis, and both packages turned up within a day of their scheduled date. My point is I hope the issue was the one package, and that this next one reaches you I'm a timely manner. But either way, I agree with your decision to adjust your buying habits. I'm really particular about customer service.

As for packages, this is the second one this year to stretch into 6-week territory and bounce randomly around the country.

And my System 302 rusticated, which is a bit smaller than the smooth. As I mentioned in another thread, I am very satisfied with them. To the point where I have others on the way.

Very nice, Claude! And a couple of fine tobaccos to go with them, I see. Especially that Old Gowrie.
