A lot of the old Texians used to shoot anything that they thought would be a threat. People wiped 'em out here, too. Times were different than now. Can't judge people who didn't know any better. I suppose I would do the same if I had livestock.

Woke up at 4:30 a.m with the dog making a lot of noise. Not barking, just making noise. She got into another sticky mouse trap in the kitchen and got stuck, but still made it back to the bedroom. Wife pulled it off her and then she stuck to the carpet. Took us about an hour with cooking oil to get the sticky off, then bathy time. I didn't sleep at all last night anyway so it gave me something to do.

Wife is a retired Hairdresser. Every once in a while she gets her pedicure box out and makes me sit down on recliner and sands my feet, she’s got a little sander for feet and goes to town. After she puts some sticky sweet smelling stuff, Buddy loves that stuff, so while she goes and puts her stuff away, Buddy comes and licks it off. I let him, he really likes it. I bought the wife some goat soap and when she does the Jaccauzi thing Buddy will lick the goat soap, she shoes him away but he comes right back, I bet his insides are squeaky clean.!

There probably at least used to be red wolves in Texas. They don't have that thick, heavy coat like the northern wolves (and dog breeds). A lot of the old Texians used to shoot anything that they thought would be a threat. Including Comanches, Mexicans, other people large and small, good and bad. LOL!

Stockmen and women are still just as techy about threats to their animals and rightly so. In these parts more stock is lost to thieves than four legged predators.

Sadly, Duke lost the battle today, after seeing improvement over the week, albeit a bit mopey by his usual self, the wife woke up to him crying throughout the night. he was having contractions in front of his rear legs, and had no energy...he walked down the stairs and outside at 6 AM, took his morning leak, but refused to come back up the stairs. Throughout the day his breathing was labored, did not want to eat and the cramps/ contractions continued, took him to a different hospital with a caring staff, and the doctor pretty quickly diagnosed Duke as having water on the heart, most likely from a tumor malignant, most likely cancerous. By the time we left, it looked like he had an udder from the water working to his belly. We came to the decision that prolonged suffering was not in his best interest, it really sucked to say goodbye to my buddy. He could barely lift his head at the goodbyes and hugs, we chose not to be there when the injection was administered. He was born on the same month as my 8 year old granddaughter, so it really broke her heart. So long, ol buddy, ol pal!

Ugh. Sorry to hear that, Charlie. Dogs are wondrous creatures, whose lives are too short.

Thanks guys, he was all heart and it never stopped growing. He raced over to kiss the new grandchild a month ago when she came to our home. He was a gentle giant, that was as affectionate as they come.

Charlie, I am SO sorry to hear of your loss. But so glad you had the joy of him for as long as you did. Maybe you’ll see him again. That’s my hope anyway, for all of us who have lost such good friends.

adding condolences on the loss. Since Nan & been together since '77, always have had older dogs, free to good home from reputable breeders, IrishSetters & a few Shelties along the way. We "steeled" ourselves that probably wouldn't be with us long, but happy that we gave 'em a "final home".

It is hard to lose these friends.

Including Comanches, Mexicans, other people large and small, good and bad. LOL! Comanches were a serious threat to anyone who wasn't Comanche! Lots of Vances killed by them! Indeed! They were trouble here, too. Just not as frequently as in Texas plains. My family lost a bunch to Santee Sioux in Minnesota back in the 1850s and 1860s. Married a few and both my mother and uncles sure looked it.

He was a gentle giant, that was as affectionate as they come. I'm so, so sorry , Charlie; I just fell into the middle of your post, and called for my wife to come see the huge, lovely dog, and your tiny grandchild. Then I saw Urb's post and our hearts fell. Pets give, and give, and ask only for our love, and in the end our final gift to them is a painless passing that leaves us so empty. I wish they made a shot for what you and your family are going through, but we'd turn it down, and savor the memories of our loving creatures instead. stay strong Charlie.

Well.. I guess I do. Some anyway. But I do wonder about that… And I know what my preference is.

When someone comes to visit I sometimes say, "If my dog(s) bother you, I can give you a treat and put you outside." That’s funny! I actually had the opportunity to say something very similar to a bitchy guest that a neighbor brought to lunch one day. She wanted the dogs put outside while we ate. I told her they were here first but she could eat on the deck if she liked. She didn’t like me very much. I was happy about that.

Took the lads to the vet the other day for some routine jabs. Included was their crotalus vaccine (made by Red Rock) for rattler protection. This stuff works and works well. Jack’s been hit three times with minimal effects. Not expensive either. I usually see they get at least two shots year, altho they need only one. You can’t overdo it. Highly recommended if you live among bad snakes. (Good for copperheads, too. And, yeah, I know: the pic is of a Good Guy, a Bull Snake, who also hates rattlers.)
