It's been a rough week for the wild life around here...on Monday one of the dog killed a baby squirrel, but nobody took credit for it. On Wednesday the pitt-bull smuggled a dead baby rabbit into the house and laid it on the great-room floor, and before I could dispose of it ,Buster ,the blind beagle, laid yet another baby rabbit ,on the deck in front of the door. Last but not least, today the shiba-inu cornered a big black snake. The snake was hiding in the cool shade under the deck ,and likely wondering what happened to all the tiny animals he used to feed on... I had a devil of a time getting the pups back in the house ,so the poor snake could get away. I hate snakes ,but I'd rather let them run off that to kill em.

Snakes are useful to have around, as long as they aren't dangerous.

A tip about dogs… if you ever have to give them a pill, the cheap chicken franks work well as a pill pocket when you press the pill into a section. Cheaper than the semi-dry ones from the pet store… but watch the dog, some are crafty at feeling the pill and spitting it out.

If we give her anything like that she swallows it whole. We're afraid she's going to choke on it. a ball of mild Cheddar works for her.

When they teased her dancing on top of the redwood fence when I lived in California, she had a solution. She would throw her front paws on the fence and the cat would fall into her jaws, a snap of the neck and it was off to happy acres for the feline. In the human world, Roxie would have had 4 death row sentences. She attacked a skunk in the back yard, she survived well but pranced in the house with the conical neck collar dripping skunk juice in the house. ( she was wearing the collar because of an eye infection).

Sent this message to a friend...and will mention this to all dog owners:
While I know you aren't in Colorado...with the heat and other factors and the fact that the "kids" run and chase critters...just wanted to let you know about this issue.
"laboratory confirmed reports of plague in animals and fleas in six counties," including La Plata, where testing has confirmed the presence of plague in a sample of fleas collected there.
"If you notice decreased rodent activity in an area where you normally see active rodents, contact your local public health agency," the CDPHE said.
Pets can also be infected, and CDPHE advised residents to use flea control products.
Additionally be aware of the dogs getting a rodent..possible “hanta” virus from the rodent. Love your doggies like I do and take care of their environment so that they don’t get something and possibly pass it on to you.

This morning Eli found a dead soldier next to the kitchen trash awaiting transport to the outside receptacle. He started playing with it and I told him “No! Leave it!!” He dropped it on the floor near the stove and then stood about 10’ away and just stared at it, tail wagging. He loves these things and I will sometimes let him have one outside. But he looked so pathetic and so full of longing that I finally told him could have it. Joy! I checked that the cap was screwed on very tight, but in about five minutes he had it off, so I confiscated it and threw it away— an unrecognizable lump of utterly destroyed plastic. He is now happily working away at further destruction, while I watch to be sure he doesn’t generate swallowable chunks. host image

Watch him in case you have to do an intervention. 😁🤠
