Sorry, the images turned on me. You get the picture.
The bag with the flakes kept as intact as possible went into a new mason jar with barely moistened hydrostone (clay) and will get slightly remoistened sometime tomorrow afternoon.

The Sansepolcro is really excellent. It's got a good bit of strength that can creep up on you so be careful with that one.
I kept all my Red Flake tins that year but I dried my first tin opened before jarring since I knew of the issue.
Had enough for 2 bowls from the 2012 McClelland Honeydew Flake so have the second bowl in my same RDP blasted bulldog. Have to sit it down and smoke something a bit cooler on the tongue for now though. Two honking bowls of straight red/mahogany has me feeling a little bit of the "Virginia Tongue."
C&D John Marr in an MM Rob Roy Legend cob.
A certain reselling male horse down in Texas is trying to sell 16 ounce bags of Hoggarth Kendal Kentucky and Kendal Dark from 2020, for a whopping $225 per bag. Mind you, both of these are in stock at SmokingPipes as I type this. $55 a pound.
He's usually pretty spot on with his prices, as you can tell from the number of "sold" tins. You can always ask him as he's easy to talk to. Yep....I too was amazed at the prices people were willing to pay for two years age, but they do. thebriarpatchforum.com/thread/8395/prices-jumping?page=1&scrollTo=307715The subject came up at the pipe club meeting yesterday about consignment fees on Steve Fallon's website, someone said it equals 35% of the cost of the sale price of the tobacco. At first look it might seem crazy expensive, but the fact of the matter is that within the last year or so Steve had to stop operating out of his house and had to secure a commercial property to operate from, and he has come under increasing scrutiny from the state for the services he provides. And, most states are demanding that sellers are required to pay taxes to the states that the purchasers reside in, so I can imagine that results in pricey software upgrades to track the taxes and send the money. He markets the product, ships it and spends a lot of time conversing with everyone. Who knows what else it all entails for his expenses? So, if you bought a tin for $15, squatted on it and it sells for $80, maybe for the price it doesn't seem so confiscatory, and there are fewer sites that allow one to sell tobacco products online, I am guessing that instagram, and other sites have clamped down. The best place to get deals on aged tobacco seem to be the pipe shows, you can still unload and purchase jarred tobacco's, as far as I know there is no place online to be able to do so.

I've purchased several tins from Steve over the years and have met the man in person. Still will point out when prices don't make any sense at all.

To my dismay while rifling through the cellar I shook a 2001 tin of Gallaher's Rich Dark Honeydew only to discover the lid had no seal and was fairly rusty. The neat little plastic bag of perfectly nestled in flakes are bone dry and teeming with white crust but otherwise ok. I will have to do a very gradual rehydration and carefully place the bag of flakes whole, into jar with hydrostone. Huge bummer though. I finally got around to vacuum sealing my square/ rectangular tins, there have been too many stories I have read of them tins failing, from what I gather it really isn’t a problem from the viewpoint of the mostly European blenders that used the square tins. Deep cellaring is a relatively new phenomenon, and in practice more on this side of the pond, the square tins are not up to the task, and can be chancy past the five year mark… if you live in a humid climate, probably a shorter time.

I had at least 5-6 Sam Gawith tins arrive with no seal from the last US shipment. I'm really surprised to still have a 2007 tin of Full Virginia Flake that still feels like the seal is solid. Those square tins are not trustworthy.

Way past my comfort zone too, at some point the price of tobacco has diminishing returns for me. But there are realities he has to deal with, and has buyers willing to pay premium prices.
It is a market driven commodity.

The square tins do tend to leak. I've had several do it. I can't seem to operate the vacuum sealer so I use the zip lock mylar bags with great results.

It sounds like it is time to buy a new vacuum sealer, Ron.
Mine is a nutrichef, and it is a snap.
We just got a Sous vide made by Anova, if the reviews are as advertised, the vacuum sealer will be getting a workout.

I'm thinking about wrapping some of that wax, lab film around the square tins. I've got a roll of it.

We also have an Anova, but we have found that zip lock freezer bags work just as well.

November 15th. going hard on the remaining sparkplug I have. SC23 searock apple(castello) and my old GBD canadian seem well fit for the blend. On the topic of tins losing seals,,, I bought some 4th generation from (mars) and noticed the seal was broken..square tin. terrible blend fyi... Not sure what topping they used but it tasted like cleaning solution... anyhoo, thoughts on how long cardboard cans last? I got some SPC blends that are all in larger metal foil layered cardboard. wondering if I should jar for long term storage? anyhoo, hope All are well!

I've had a couple dreams over the past week or two for some reason about taking a trip to Paul's Pipe Shop in Michigan, and when I get there it's some magical pipe emporium frozen in time, they have a pipe shop as large as an entire mall, and complete with every single tobacco that's ever existed, and millions and millions of pipes!
I've been unable to decide on another smoke the past hour so I'm just going with 2016 Haunted Bookshop in an MM Mark Twain.
