I avoided Peterson pipes for years due to QC issues in the newer pipes for their pricepoints, but I finally got a nice lower end Aran 106 large billiard earlier this year and it's a really great smoker. My next Pete will certainly be a bent billiard system pipe. Was up way too late but my first smoke of the day is now some VA Perique Crumble Kake mixed with a bit of Milan's Our Carter Hall in an MM Mark Twain cob. I've been stretching this sample out for weeks now by adding stronger burleys, cutting acidity in blends, etc and I do quite like the aroma of this one. It really goes great with most stronger burley and can add a fantastic aroma to otherwise stale, strong burley room notes. One bowl of the Milan's Our Carter Hall remaining. Be sure to make your next Peterson a Deluxe System. They give you the full benefit of the system. Not bad looking either. I agree, my Deluxe System pipes always deliver a cool dry smoke.....them pipes seem to deliver more moisture to the well than any other pipe I own though, but traps it in that well. At the end of the smoke after emptying the bowl, I remove the stem and sling out the moisture, wad up a Napkin/paper towel, followed by a bent pipe cleaner after I do the stem. After that it is good for a back to back smoke. Such an Iconic pipe that smokes as good as it looks.....nice pipe there, Ron! Ed never had that issue, when he was a teenager he got his pipes directly from Charles Peterson.

Well hell, I'd take a Paddy Larrigan house pipe any day. Fat chance I'll land that, though!

Just had some of Charlie's 2016 OGS in this Nuttens cutty: It has a tall, narrow bowl, which is supposedly ideal for Virginias, and I wanted to maximize my experience with this old OGS as much as possible. OGS is one of my favorites even fresh. This stuff, though. It has all the virtues I like so much in fresh OGS, only they're deeper, rounder, and noticeably sweeter. And it smokes nice and easy. (I don't have problems with tongue bite, but I can tell this is cooler, regardless.) I'm very happy I have a good bit of this cellared for down the road. Have a good bit of HH Pure Virginia, too, which I find very similar when fresh, at least. Thanks again, Charlie. You done me a solid.

Smoking the same stuff, (OGS 2016) it was one of my first smokes with the hay like taste...I used to buck bales of hay as a kid. But, when fresh as a new smoker, I was growing raspberries on the roof of my mouth. as it ages, that haylike taste is still there, more muted but not getting roof-rash...but then it may be because I am a more experienced smoker.
Glad you like it!

Yeah, I'm just fortunate, I guess, in not being prone to getting bitten. I'm also a slow smoker and a loose packer, though, which probably helps.

I think I'll join you gentlemen in the New Years Eve aged OGS. I've just gotten back from a long walk around my local park walking trail a bit over an hour ago. We've had a 50 degree evening here on New Years Eve. Had some chicken fajitas from a nice local Mexican joint, and now I'm prepping 2010 Orlik Golden Sliced to smoke in my 2021 Ardor Urano bent billiard. A 2.75 inch bowl depth on this one. It's a massive hand-filler of a pipe and yet it's still surprisingly clenchable.
Orlik Golden Sliced was my first favorite tobacco. I used to smoke it quite often in my first couple pipes on long drives to jobs 1-3 hours out of town and it's a smoke I've always found requires snails pace slow smoking in order to pick up all the bergamot citrus top notes and the nuances of the leaf. I used to smoke the OGS and LNF back to back quite often to compare. While similar in component tobaccos, Luxury Navy Flake is sauced with traditional Danish notes, and Orlik Golden Sliced is sauced with citrus/bergamot and some minor form of anise component. Even slow smoking it I can get a bad "Virginia tongue" if I smoke 3-4 bowls in a row of it. Absolutely love Orlik Golden Sliced. I bought 3-4 aged tins at the last NASPC show in August for great prices from Paul's Pipe Shop.

I opened a small tin of Union Square fresh, and well, it was a fresh Virginia. Bought a few of the 8 oz. cans for the cellar. Favorite Drucquer is Blairgowrie. I need to go through his offerings and find a few more for variety's sake. When the time comes to pop the lid on them 8 oz. bad boys, if you have a vacuum sealer, I recommend sealing them up in weeklong smokeable portions. My tobacconist which has been practicing for 40 years has suggested that once the tin is popped after several years, the downside of being exposed to air takes a foothold quickly...jarring does not offer the same benefit. Sage advice, but I am not the source, just the conduit. I agree with that but only for very old tobacco; decades of age. Once a very old tobacco has been unsealed, it can go downhill very quickly. However, for less than 20 years of age, in my experience, no worries. A couple of examples: I have a 2006 Germain 1820 open right now. When I popped the 50gm tin, I dried it down (15 years in a rectangular tin and still Germain wet), put it in a mason jar, and have been smoking at my usual pace of about 3 or 4 months to smoke the tin. No rapid downhill. Second example is the 2011 GLP Union Square that I also have open. I got the 8oz can back in 2018. Popped the can and separated it into 4 mason jars. I’m currently smoking the third jar of those. It’s perfectly fine.

I’d join everyone in the aged OGS party, but the 17 slots on my open tobacco shelves are full. So, I have no room to pull one out of the cellar right now.

A tip for OGS fans: Try Heinrich's Golden Sliced some time. OGS is good, but I like Heinrich’s better,

I've got a large open tin of Heinrich's Golden Sliced jarred currently.

I imagine that the herd is getting pretty thin on such acquisitions. It is pretty cool that those in a position to acquire them are generally very generous in sharing when it is so. The pipe community has some good folk!

Good stuff, sharing personal experience helps inform us all. In the instance of my tobacconist, the tobacco was 30-40 years old...it tasted great the night of the smoke, a few days later it tasted like dirty disgusting old tobacco.
