We appear to have picked up a lot of new members recently including some new smokers as well so I thought this might be fun.
Unless I'm away from home, I use a little food processor I scored at a yard sale for a few bucks a couple years ago to grind up my flakes. I'm too lazy to rub them out anymore.
I use empty Quesa jars for short term tobacco storage. The jars aren't the issue as a couple minutes in boiling water will make any jar suitable for short term storage - The lids are the question. Unlike tomato, garlic or any other product, Quesa lids clean up rather easily and a little vodka sitting overnight will kill any nasties in the lids. They'll normally keep any tobacco good for at least one year on the cheap.
Speaking of vodka, I've been using triple distilled 80 proof Kettle One to clean my briar pipes for years. I don't disagree grain alcohol is probably superior; however, my babies show no ill effects and Kettle One makes a better Bloody Mary.
Wessex Burley Slice and Solani Aged Burley Flake are both quite excellent in their own right; nevertheless, I always spike them with a little mixing Cavendish after they've been properly processed in the little grinder. Don't tell anybody.
I've come to prefer filtered pipes over non-filtered. 9mm Savs from across the pond with meerschaum filters and MM Cobs with Grabow filters dominate my daily rotation.
So what about the rest of y'all. Fess up and come clean - It's good for the soul.

… I'm sorry Mark… I can't confess...I use Everclear and no filters...I have mixed a few tobaccos over the years but very few...and I still rub or dice my flakes/plugs...However, I see nothing wrong with the way anyone chooses to prepare or store their tobacco...

While, in general, I am blameless and have an alibi, it is true that I re-hydrate some mixtures with a few drops of Scotch or Irish Whisky.

I use Crown Royal as it is the only whiskey I have on hand (for my wife, as I don't consume any alcohol any more with the meds I am on). I used to use a small coffee grinder, but now I use a head shop hand grinder that works really well and I can control the amount of shredding that happens. I use the jars from Walmart to store my daily use tobacco. I have over 80 of these and a wide selection to choose from...and they keep the tobacco almost as well as the mason jars I use for long term storage. Hope that helps.

I take my pipes apart straight after a smoke. 😱

I take my pipes apart straight after a smoke. 😱 I do this, too. I blame Fred Hanna. He planted the idea with one of his essays. He says he's been breaking down pipes hot for forty years with no problems, so why can't I ?
--
As a dirtier secret, I prefer to use isopropyl alcohol to clean pipes. It's cheap as dirt and can be had in very high strengths.
It's no more toxic than grain alcohol. And it smells just as vile. So why not?

I'm so glad to hear that I'm not the only one who does this stuff. I take apart hot pipes all the time and use isopropyl too.
I'd confess to all kinds of things related to me being a tightwad with my pipes and tobacco but I kind of wear that on my sleeve.
Here's a confession though. I own one meerschaum pipe. I once took the stem off and stuck the stummel in jar. I then proceeded to blow smoke from my charring lights into the jar and resealed it. This went on for about a month. It colored my meerschaum in a hurry.

I sometimes use an "Herb" grinder that I bought at a campus headshop to grind up tough flakes and slices from G&H ropes.
I clean my pipes with isopropyl alcohol.
I don't have any dedicated pipes. I smoke everything in every pipe, ghosting be damned.
Three Sails is a excellent VA shag and makes an excellent lawn mowing smoke.
I have no idea how to pack a pipe, I could never explain it, my fingers just do it and it works.
Sometimes when I want to be alone on the porch I will light up some 1792 or Dark Bird's Eye so my wife will go inside.

Since I like pretty much all tobacco, Va. reds particularly bite my tongue like crazy, but I still smoke em...just a lot sloooower. Lats I do smoke in a single pipe, a Paronelli bent bulldoggie, but my Lakelands which I know ghost a pipe like Marley ghost...they go in all my pipes...I just like the smell and they don't seem to adversely affect the taste of the "regular" tobaccos like aros. Sometimes I even chip a little Lakeland into an aro for additional flavor. I did that with G&H Dark Plug cause the Dark Plug has a nic kick like a mule and I can't smoke it straight (I tried once and was dizzy (more than usual) after the second puff (almost said hit and thereby disclose my past...which ain't pretty).

My poor Grabow has barely got a rest since I bought it.
I cheat on my briars with cobs 9 times out of 10.
I use isopropyl to clean new (estate) pipes.
My "dedicated pipes" lasted no more than 2 weeks. Now I smoke whatever I feel like in whatever I feel like.
I tend to smoke pretty hot unless I'm really paying attention and my pipe has my full attention.
I have enough tobacco to last me a LONG time, but I feel I will never have enough so I continuously buy more.
I think about what my next pipe will be full of way before my current one is finished. This often changes so I end up with pipes full of tobacco lined up waiting and I forget what is in each one.
I dont like Sutliff RR Match at all. (This changed after a few months rest in a jar.)
Most important: NO ONE knows what I have spent on pipes or tobacco since I started. I added it up the other day and... well... yeh....
Theres probably more, but that's all i can think of right now.

When I first started thinning my briar herd in half, the first one to go was the Castello 4K Sea Rock. Don't get me wrong - I really dug the pipe; nevertheless, I knew if I was going to be serious, it would bring some jack and had to be the first one overboard.

I too pull apart hot pipes, use isopropyl, and have no clue how to pack a pipe "properly".
And I cannot stand my Radice Underwood that was a gift, so I quietly keep smoking it even though it turns into the surface of the sun no matter how gently I smoke.

But I also cheat and use softies, so there's that.

Most pipe smokers have a method they’ve used for years...what works well for one pipe smoker might not for another. The newbies will learn soon enough.....really there is no right or wrong method.

I have probably 50+ small sample of 1oz or less... in plastic baggies stuffed into tupperware containers.
+1 on the 9mm filters - it's been a revelation for certain blends, and I'm finding understanding Perique!

I like sailing with the Captain. Captain Black Royal is a regular in my rotation. Perfect for driving, or mowing, or similar mindless tasks where I cant focus on the pipe. I have it jarred, right next to my premium tobaccos.
I'll smoke any tobacco out of any pipe. I have a few dedicated, but I cheat sometimes with certain blends.
I'll smoke multiple bowls out of a pipe in a single day, and still only let it rest 1 day, and not that day per bowl nonsense.
I enjoy filtered pipes. Dr. Grabows, filtered, are perfect kick around briars, and imo cobs smoke better with a filter.
I like Cornell&Diehl burley (a confession of sin to some, and a loud AMEN!, from others).

I must confess... I prefer my MM cobs with filters... But if you use a filter, you can't use a Walker "Forever Stem."
What a quandary

I dunno, I kinda like the standard MM stems. Easy on the teeth if you're a clencher, and dirt cheap to replace.

I noticed today that I almost have a hole through the top of one of my cob stems. So what did I do? Flipped it over of course. The bottom was like brand new.

Quite. I have four "forever stems" I'll probably never use. On the other hand, I have a bag full of MM replacement stems. All is well.
