CONFESSION:
I shaved off my beard after many many years of sporting one. For a bunch of reasons but mostly because I am of an age where the beard makes me look older, and looking older is not what i want to do.

Although not one for confessions, I will confess to feeling, at times, like a person born in the wrong time. I prefer movies from the 30's and 40's. My favorite music is jazz from the 40's and 50's. I'll take Frank Sinatra over anyone carrying a tune alive today. I prefer scotch and soda for my "social" drink. Many of my views on the world are considered out dated. And, I prefer pipes that were born in the same time frame. But, as I am typing this on a MacBook Pro enjoying the gift of air conditioning, I am certainly not a slave to my passions I know exactly what you mean. Really its a modern dilemma. As time goes on and things change we all have more options. There is no law that says we have to adopt the latest and greatest. We can pick and chose from among modern and older fashions and hobbies and paraphernalia. So for example I can text friends and family. That doesn't mean I can't send someone a hand written note. I can smoke a clay pipe. It doesn't mean I need to wear a tricorn hat. So for me, I don't want to go back in time, or that I would have rather lived there, just that there are things of the 20s and 30s that were so great I think they still are great. Its 2018 but we can still drink an old fashioned together. I am ALWAYS available for drinking an old fashion!!

For a bunch of reasons but mostly because I am of an age where the beard makes me look older, and looking older is not what i want to do. I don't get the connection between beards and pipes anyway. I originally grew a beard because I was sick and tired of shaving. Well mostly. I also wanted to fit into my musical community. I don't get the connection between beards and old time music anyway. OK, if you want to go hipster, but not sport a beard, you can always get a brush and shaving cup, and even a straight razor.

Sometimes when no one is looking I flip my wrist to sling the moisture out of my pipe shank onto a piece of newspaper or a paper towel rather than use a pipe cleaner. There, I said it. Ha! I do the same thing. Especially if I am outside.

No the coke does not make it sticky I use more than one pipe cleaner. So after it cleans I clean it until my pipe cleaner comes out clean. Yes regular and diet coke.

Another not so secret are the crapgame mixes where you dump all your so-so vanillas or other things into one jar and let them become One with the Universe. I'm guilty of this one too.

So for example I can text friends and family. That doesn't mean I can't send someone a hand written note. I can smoke a clay pipe. It doesn't mean I need to wear a tricorn hat. I would love to have and wear a Tricorn or a Bowler. I like to wear my Fedoras and at specific times I'll don my Chapeaux to freak people out. I would agree with that. We can pick and choose those things from the past that we appreciate. What I don't like is that others tend to put labels on things that we do. So if I want to smoke a pipe and have a beard, but I'm not retired I'm suddenly a hipster. Eh? No. Sorry I read that wrong.I thought you said"I'm suddenly a Monster".That I could agree to,I'm the cute green fuzzy one with one horn.

BUUUUMP. LET'S HEAR 'EM, BOYS.
1. One of my favorite smokes is Carter Hall in a MM second.
2. I rarely clean my pipes.
3. As I don't have a pipe holder, my pipes are currently hanging on a board by a couple strands of paracord.
4. My entire pipe collection cost less than $300.
5. I rarely read tobacco reviews.
6. Cult Blood Red Moon is disgusting, and I curl my lips if I ever see one of y'all smoking it in the WAYS thread.

Just ordered some filters from Amazon. FOR SCIENCE! Just to get back to this, since someone liked my comment: the filters did not work for me (MM corncobs). The draw was too restricted, and I felt they lost flavor. I'm just not a filter guy, I guess.

I like CBRM for about one tin's worth and then gave all my tins of it away. Too goopy for me. Maybe it would work as an ice cream topping.

I liked the first several bowls, but it's just sicky sweet to me now. Too over the top. I still enjoy Molto Dolce from Time to time, and that's an explosive aromatic, but BRM is just kinda ersatz tasting to me these days.

We appear to have picked up a lot of new members recently including some new smokers as well so I thought this might be fun. Unless I'm away from home, I use a little food processor I scored at a yard sale for a few bucks a couple years ago to grind up my flakes. I'm too lazy to rub them out anymore. I use empty Quesa jars for short term tobacco storage. The jars aren't the issue as a couple minutes in boiling water will make any jar suitable for short term storage - The lids are the question. Unlike tomato, garlic or any other product, Quesa lids clean up rather easily and a little vodka sitting overnight will kill any nasties in the lids. They'll normally keep any tobacco good for at least one year on the cheap. Speaking of vodka, I've been using triple distilled 80 proof Kettle One to clean my briar pipes for years. I don't disagree grain alcohol is probably superior; however, my babies show no ill effects and Kettle One makes a better Bloody Mary. Wessex Burley Slice and Solani Aged Burley Flake are both quite excellent in their own right; nevertheless, I always spike them with a little mixing Cavendish after they've been properly processed in the little grinder. Don't tell anybody. I've come to prefer filtered pipes over non-filtered. 9mm Savs from across the pond with meerschaum filters and MM Cobs with Grabow filters dominate my daily rotation. So what about the rest of y'all. Fess up and come clean - It's good for the soul. The last flake I smoked was Lancer's Slices. I used to rub the flakes out. If I get more flakes, I just may have to buy a coffee grinder.

The main reason I like to smoke flake is the minimum preparation. Wad it up, jam it in.
Easier on my arthritic fingers than trying to handle ribbon cut.

When I smoke (special occasions) , my pipes are predominantly (almost exclusively) briars with each pipe dedicated to one of three categories Latakia, Virginia and aromatic blends. I give a light cleaning to each pipe after every smoke. This involves wiping the inside of the bowl with a paper towel and cleaning the shank and stem with pipe cleaners dipped in inexpensive vodka.
Suffering from TAD & PAD from time to time, I have always saught the deal. Pipes, cigars and a growing pipe tobacco cellar are apparent, most from past purchases. My current poisons include Ramses, Eskimo and Hungarian/Oom Paul styled pipes while stocking up on blends that have been placed on the market after the FDA grandfather date. Finances being the limiting factor, my PAD & TAD have been held in check to a great degree though the wife might be of a different opinion (on occasion).😁
PS I use soft rubber pipe bits on all my pipes. Most of my bits have been purchased on eBay through a Chinese pipe accessories seller. Still alive and kicking the rubber bits cost around ~3.00 USA per 20 units. One of my first pipes was an Edwards straight billiard/ freehand variant. Though it smokes brilliantly, it is also one of only a few in my collection (I am not fond of most straight stem/shank pipes and have many pipes that differ which smoke just as well.).😁

I smoke one tobacco, and I smoke it in all pipes indiscriminately. When I'm starting to get tired of that one tobacco, I finish it and then get something new. I run a pipe cleaner through the stem as necessary, and just wipe the bowl out with a dry paper towel. I do not smoke everyday. When I want a smoke, I have one. But I'm not bound to it. Maybe average 4 or 5 bowls a week, sometimes more...sometimes less. I am, I suppose, to be considered simply a pipe Philistine because of these abominable confessions, and am therefore destined for weepy excommunication from my beloved patch.

1. I clean estates with whatever alcohol is handy. 2. I have more estates waiting to be cleaned and restored than I will ever get around to doing. 3. My wife does not know I have a storage container under the bed full of said estates. 4. I don't rotate my pipes. Nor have specific pipes for specific blends. 5. Often I will smoke half a bowl, set it in my pipe rack and then forget about it for days, weeks, months... then smoke it when I discover it. 6. I smoke in my office at my body shop pretty much every evening. There are ginormous "No smoking" signs posted everywhere in the building.
