Awards shows, halftime shows, news readers hosting parades, etc, never make it onto my entertainment radar. I do, however think there is a lot of good music still being made. I find things I like all the time. Not formulaic crap or people just copying another's sound. I can also think of a lot of music from the 60s, 70s and 80s, that was garbage. Bubblegum and disco come to mind as genres that mostly sucked. Fifty years from now, people will still know who Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton or Ray Charles were. (Not sure why I picked those three) Most artists will be forgotten. My son's favorite bands are the Stones, Alice Cooper, the Doors, and Iron Butterfly. Did your dad think the Stones, Alice Cooper, the Doors, and Iron Butterfly were filthy, unmusical crap?

Pop culture has been in a state of persistent decline for over thirty years... Don't expect it to improve any time soon.

My dad died in January of 1960, so I don't know what he would have thought. He had played fiddle in a western swing band but I never got to hear him. I hope that he at least liked some of the new music that had just died. He mostly listened to gospel music and Red Foley in his last years.

Did you ever think having a avatar of Castro with a camera would earn you respect and credibility. I rest my case.

I remember my mom walked into my room one day and commented that the Aerosmith album I had on: "Toys in the Attic" was not very good compared to what I was listening to prior. I had been listening to Led Zepplin's fourth album. She really surprised me with that and it meant a lot to me then and now. I truly enjoy listening to and sharing music with my kids. We have a lot of overlapping taste in music. Road trips are better for us because of that.

To this day when I see The Waterboy I chuckle when Mama says It's the Devil. My mother said that all the time.

When my dad was alive I had "The Original Cast Recording of South Pacific" and a lot of Gilbert and Sullivan. As a young pre-teen and teen I listened to mostly classical music. Led Zeppelin was the first popular music album I remember playing in my bedroom. My mother never commented on any of it.

Did you ever think having a avatar of Castro with a camera would earn you respect and credibility. I rest my case. No, I just like the photo. I don't use avatars to earn credibility and respect. I'd tell you what caused you to lose credibility and respect in this thread but I bet you're not interested so I'll just leave it alone. Also, you'd sound smarter if you could tell the difference between Castro and Che. They look nothing alike!

When I bought the Beatle's "Abbey Road", my father sat down in the living room with me and listened to the entire thing. He told me he liked it. I'll never forget that.

If it isn’t sung by Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, George Jones, or the Statler Brothers, is it really music? AJ

One band today that gives me hope is Red Sun Rising. They're just kind of hovering on the cusp of becoming mainstream. IMHO, they have more raw talent than most any other band I can think of that's sprung up in the last 10-15 years. They are also one of those rare bands that are even better live. They call their music "thread", which I like because it captures what they do: weave elements of very different kinds of music together, everything from post-grunge to folk to almost minstrel. Stylistically, one song can be very different from the next, but it's all them.
Worth checking out if you like rock (in a generic sense since I don't really know what else to call them).

Every decade has good and bad music and every musical style appeals to some people and not to others.

I like the Black Keys, some Gaga, and a little bit of other current acts. I don't see any of them still being played in 50 years.

My sisters were that kind of Baptist. Luckily they regained their sense of humor before they died. Saints, both of them. One Baptist preacher friend used to say, "Lord help protect us from the newly saved".

He grew up to dislike the Baptist religion. He often spoke of his childhood where his family would have the Baptist minister and his wife over every Sunday for dinner. On those occasions the children sat at a separate table and were not fed until the adults had finished their dinner. I think his issues were entirely food related.

She was hard on me but it was mostly self inflicted. I was the hellraiser of the four of us and drove my parents nuts. To this day I don't know how they survived me and I'm lucky that none of my kids put me through what I put my parents through.

We had the pastors over for dinner often and we often had dinner at the parsonage. I was used to sitting at the table with the pastors. A couple of them always ate at the kids table. "Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven".
