Hell, if one member can have a Reagan avatar, another can have a Che avatar. I think it's odd for guys who grew up in the rebellious 60s to totally dismiss rap. There's a lot of creativity and social/political commentary that tends to get less attention than some of the more TV-friendly stuff out there. Sex and violence (and combinations of the two) seem to be acceptable to the mainstream, but most people don't hear the kind of hip hop that has the righteous anger and civil rights statements that were being made in the 60s, or in the 70s and 80s with punk. Dr. MLK never slapped his bitches and bragged about shooting his homeboys with the foulest language possible. I knew the Ghetto Boys and they were just as bad as the mafia. Neither do all rappers. Just saying, it's a diverse musical style and you can't tar it all with the same brush (musically, maybe - but lyrically it's just not all about "bitches and ho's". Like in the reggae world - some are singing about one love, one world etc., others are singing about killing gays.

I respect your opinion, but it's crap, buddy. I get where you're coming from, but I just don't like rap. It isn't for lack of trying either. I grew up in the 90s and have had to sit on many a couch listening to countless 'thugs' try to convert me. haha I like some of the old stuff. It had a certain charm, but it's just so boring anymore.
The subject may be righteous, but the painting is terrible, ya dig?

If you like it, more power to you... but don't force me to listen to it... or Ron and I will come after you with our big irons.

The subject may be righteous, but the painting is terrible, ya dig? Musically, I actually agree. I don't listen to a lot of rap. Meaning almost never. It's just that I think it's valid as a cultural phenomenon - and so does much of the world. I've heard Israeli hip hop and Palestinian hip hop, and it's become a staple in Bollywood movies. Pretty much every country I can think of has its own hip hop now.

Pop culture has been in a state of persistent decline for over thirty years... Don't expect it to improve any time soon. People have been making this complaint for at least as long as recorded history. I assume they have been complaining longer than that, but they didn't write it down!Β Β Β
Hell, Augustus passes laws criminalizing adultury and marriage between patricians and children of actors and musicians, and penalized adults who did not have legitimate children. (Ironically this was after he came to power because Caesar did not have legitimate children. Hypocrisy is traditional.) Later Roman governments institutionalized political correctness by first banning, and then requiring, Christianity, setting up many future wars for the βeverybody in this country must have the same religionβ cause (which was not a new concept even in Romulusβ time). History is just one big playlist on repeat.

I remember when my grandparents used to say, "If you like that crap, more power to you...but don't force the whole neighborhood to listen to it". Only then they were talking about the kids blasting Rush's "Tom Sawyer" or something along those lines, not rap music.

There are older African American gentlemen saying the same thing about Punk Rock and Metal back in the North Side where I lived during my college years. hahahaha

...and while we're on the subject... I like LOTS of music that is not of the '50s/'60s generation, going way the heck back before the turn of the 20th Century. But Rap? Sorry kids, that ain't music.

I have music in my collection that was written a thousand years ago. I like big band, Broadway, bluegrass, Irish and pretty much all the good music of previous generations. With the exception of Spike Jones. I at least get grunge and punk and even like some of it. But rap is meant to be divisive, in your face and to be as offensive as possible to as many people as possible. No, just no.

I read your post and heard my grandmother and grandfather. They both used almost the exact phrase you did. My post was a reminiscence not a commentary or rebuttal to anybody yours or anyone else's post.

Rap is like any other element in a composition, itβs not much on its own but part of a whole that is the music. I mean, drums are atonal but undeniably an element of composition, right? I think Jay-Z is the master of this: But I donβt think it would be controversial to say that e.g. the Bomb Squad is at least as important as Public Enemy themselves.

I don't inherently have a problem with rap as a music form. I take issue with so much of the violent lyrics and as a result have rejected most of it categorically. Maybe that's wrong, but that's me. That's not to say that other music forms haven't touched on violence, Johnny Cash sang 'I killed a man in Reno just to watch him die.' but almost all his other music is a ballad or about love. I do have friends and family that listen to some of the better (my description) rap that doesn't deal with violence and sexual exploitation. Perhaps my generalization of the form is wrong.

Im gonna let the cat out of the bag here.
Like The Highlander, I too am one of the immortals. My age? I'm wicked old. Like, I knew Jesus as a kid kind of old. With that said, music just hasnt been good to me since 72AD.
