A Star is Born (1937). I think it still holds up. Frederic March tries to chew the scenery and Janet Gaynor works really hard to let him do it. You can tell she liked her role more than the short damsel in distress films she started out in. That's a good one. My favorite version is the Judy Garland one.

Watched HUNTER KILLER (2018) last night. A submarine movie with Gerard Butler, Michael Nykvist. All sub movies have much in common. This one had great CGI and an interesting (if improbable) story. Navy seals rescuing the coup-kidnapped Russian president and averting WW3. (Not Putin BTW. This pre-dates Ukraine.) Very well done production design and the bluescreen work was seamless.

Been wanting to see that one. We just watched Jurassic World Dominion. It had everything that was in the other films, a silly plot and plenty of exciting entertainment. Wife yelling at the TV means it's way better than average.

Where the Crawdads Sing, good movie, from a book, didn't read it, but if it's better than the book, then you'll like it. Amazon Streaming!

- Don't Look Up
- I'm Nobody
- RED
- Get Back
- Red Notice
That's about it off the top of my head. Some of these films were released before 2022. But I saw them for the first time this year.

"The Courier", a 1960s Spy thriller.
Benedict Cucumberpatch portrays the tribulations of the "Gifted Amateur" recruited to MI6 to assist in stealing secrets from the GRU. Or not.

Turns out to be a true story about the largest cache of secrets stolen from the Soviets. The real evidence of Soviet missiles in Cuba.
Did not end well for either of the principals but at least the Englishman was eventually returned home alive.

I am glad that I was too young to know what was going on during the Cuban missile crisis...spooky times.

I am glad that I was too young to know what was going on during the Cuban missile crisis...spooky times. It was a very nervous time. We were either duck and covering in the hallway at school or glued to the TV at home. We didn't get any school work done.

Yes, it was a tense time.
I was in Catholic Elementary school. We did a lot of praying. The Fathers were very calm and stoic as I recall. Our Monsignor was a grand old Irishman who was wonderful with kids. Monsignor "Casino" Collins. That helped a lot. The Nuns and Lay teachers were surprisingly better than usual. My mother lost a husband, a brother, a father, and many friends in WWII (she had married into USN Bombing 1). She was resigned to what ever was going to happen. She had enough grief. My Dad just ticked along as he always did.
Anyway, the movie is worth a watch. well done.

High class to apologize for the name-game. I look at those who like to play that passive-aggressive game— even against those I despise— as retarded 7th graders.

The unforgivable action on his part was the Nicotene patches on Sherlock and no pipe. Maybe they should show Sherlock with a Mohawk and saggy pants also?
That change I am sure was made higher up the chain though.
He is a pretty decent actor.

He must have had a tough childhood… I admit that the first time I heard his name, I immediately thought of my own version of how it should be spelled.

"Kesari", 2019
An Indian made movie filmed on the Khyber Pass. Based on the true story of how a detachment of 21 Sikh soldiers of the Indian Army in a fort held off 10,000 Afghan Pathans for a few days. 1897. Great characters. Subtitled, of course, with English bits of dialogue. Story is enhanced greatly with the Bollywood acrobatic effects in combat, Fun movie. Long at 2+ hours because there is a lot of sentimental mushy stuff with the lead soldier and his wife before the battle. Great battle scenes. The Pathans are really bad and the Sikhs highly noble and courageous. They must have found all the Martini Henry .45 rifles in existence for this movie, lol! Interesting they had not been issued the modern .303 Lee Enfield rifle. They do have a scene with a nice old Maxim machine gun.
Anyway, fun movie. Well acted, well made. Beautiful scenery.

The Outfit, about a tailor who gets involved with some wise guys. All filmed in one room. Slow start but it builds to a twisted ending. Afterwards you think, "What a great movie".

Watched THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER (1990) last night. Great cast. This was before CGI got its legs but still not bad. Funny detail: Early in the film in order to further his defection aims, Captain Ramius (Sean Connery) kills the odious by-the-book political officer. The officer’s name? Putin.

Watched the original DIRTY HARRY last night. So dated and SO un-PC. Definitely could not be made today. A bit corny in spots but still holds up pretty well.

Went to the theater, watched Amsterdam, a good movie with a bunch of great actors and actresses.
One hot looking young dame in a role smoking what appeared to be a Peterson with a gold band, early 1900’s.
