You must have heard the old Cameraman's joke about C.B. DeMille and his cinematographers. It was during the filming of "Ten Commandments in 1955. The scene involved parting the Red Sea. This was so the Israelites could escape the pursuing Egyptians sent by Pharoh to recapture them. By special arrangement with the Almighty and President Nasser, DeMille first filmed the scene on location at the actual Red Sea. Now, DeMille, being a very experienced Director, position three camera crews to film the scene. One was close up on the shore where the parting was to occur. The second was back about 100 yards and intended for a Medium Shot of the event. Then at 400 yards was the third camera intended for the Long Shot of the scene. This was more of a memento for the Director. So, the Director called for "Action". Our Lord did his part and opened the way, the Israelites passed through and then the Egyptian Army. The sea dropped shut on the First Division of the Egyptians. When the dust settled the Director headed over to the Principal Cameraman and asked, "Did you get the shot?" "I am terribly sorry, Mr. DeMille, but the camera jammed from sand in the magazine", No. 1, replied. "No problem. "Second camera, did you get the shot?" "Sorry, Sir. The wind came up and blurred the lens. We did not get much", called back from the second position. "Well, Number Three, YOU must have got SOMETHING"? He was agitated now! To which that unknown Cameraman uttered that famous line, "Ready when you are, C.B." I'm totally stealing this joke.

Watched THE LEGEND OF 1900 tonight, having been mentioned here. I can’t think of enough bad things to say about it. Actually, I could. But I don’t want to offend anyone who might have liked it. Sorry you didn't like it. Some do, some don't. I did. Watched The Contractor with Chris Pine tonight. 3/5. Also watched the 4th episode of Tulsa with Stallone. We really like that. Tulsa is good. Funny too. Jack Ryan season 3

Milius was (is?) an obdurate stickler for weapon-accuracy in his films. He knew what was used and insisted that the real thing be found and used in the film,, often at great trouble and expense. I appreciate the effort he makes for accurate details. I enjoy all his films. "The Wind and the Lion" is another gem.

What’s not to like about a Berber chieftain with a Scots burr?

"The Colditz Story", 1955. What the American movie "The Great Escape" was based upon, it seems. British, Dutch, Polish, and French POWS in 1940 escape from a German castle POW prison. Superb Cast. I recommend it. In particular, the great Fritz Valk portrays the Wehrmacht Commandant. You might remember him from "Night Train to Munich". He plays a similar character. "SOooo, you chose not to RISZZZE when a German Officer passes? You should get down on your fat bellies and craw!."
With Eric Portmann, John Mills, Lionel Jefferies, Anthony Newly, and a host of familiar faces from 1950s British movies.

Gremlins, minus the bar scene which heavily references the early 80s, it totally holds up.

Guess I was looking for a good story Ron, beautiful photo shots, just not my cup of tea,, guess I’m a western and drama guy! That's why we have so many choices and channels. Plus, with the reduction in quality programming from the pandemic closing down production and the Wokist religion restricting what can be made.

"Ice Cold in Alex", 1958. John Mills. Harry Andrews, Anthony Quayle, and some English bird I cannot name. Tobruk is being evacuated prior to the siege. An Army Ambulance driven by the above has to make it to Alexandria. They cannot drive the coastal highway owing to the presence of Jerries and Italians. So, they go into the desert. They have their challenges. Who knew what a one ton, two wheel drive, four cylinder, Bedford truck was capable of? Engine overheating, springs breaking, tires slipping. The title refers to what John Mills is hoping for... an ice cold lager in the grand hotel bar. Everyone needs a hope! Good movie.

We watched 2 Sharpe movies last night. Sharpe's Company and Sharpe's Enemy. The latter had a particularly satisfying ending, but not as good as the book.
